With nearly 100 percent of Connecticut Light and Power customers in
Farmington Valley towns still without power on Monday morning, schools in
the area are closed for the day.
Avon, Canton, Farmington and Simsbury public schools are all closed on
Halloween.
Canton has opened a shelter at the Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave.
Farmington has opened one at Farmington High School, 10 Monteith Drive.
Simsbury has opened both Simsbury High School, 34 Farms Village Road, and
Squadron Line School, 44 Squadron Line Road, for those who need shelter. | D****R
发帖数: 6053 | 2 A shelter opened by the town at Farmington High School is warm and by 8 p.m.
Sunday night more than 250 cots were in use.
The town opened the shelter at 7 p.m. Saturday night to provide a warm place
for residents who had lost power or been forced from their homes by the
October snowstorm. Hot showers are available in the locker rooms and
residents are being provided with military-style cots, which they can set up
in individual classrooms for more privacy.
Nancy Parent, Farmington's social services director, is making sure everyone
is fed by bringing food up from Stop & Shop, which is running on generators
and still selling some items. George's Pizza was also working to get its
ovens running to make pizzas for the group, she said.
Some residents, like Anita Schwagger, were just coming up to get warm and
charge their cell phone batteries. Schwagger had no power but was able to
make meatloaf on the outdoor grill and coffee in a camper the family owns.
She has been unable to get in touch with family because landlines are down,
however.
"Thank goodness for the Town of Farmington," she said.
Others like Robin Bangham came to stay at the shelter when they heard trees
falling around their home.
"We heard the tree come down and the building shook. We called the fire
department and they said it was an emergency evacuation so we came up here,"
Bangham said. "They've accommodated us very well."
Richard Krysiak, of Glastonbury, was without power at his house, as was his
92-year-old father Ted Krysiak, a Farmington resident.
"I couldn't bring him to my house because I didn't have power either, so he'
ll be staying the night here," he said.
Children at the high school were playing ball in the gym Sunday afternoon to
pass the time. Meanwhile, Parent was bringing out more cots as firefighters
took a school bus to pick up resident who couldn't get to the high school.
Anyone in need of a ride to the shelter should call the Farmington Police
Department at 860-675-2400. The shelter will be open as long as necessary,
