i heard much earlier - it is black tie optional (meaning maybe not gowns,
but still dresses). Even with that, i don't think people will show up
wearing heans and sneakers.

Hey, you emailed dance legends to me once! Yes, i finally decided to go, and
watch from the 5th row to the dance floor. It's more money but still beats
the trip to Japan or Blackpool.
None of my pictures taken came out well. The spot light was too strong,
which wiped out the color, and dancers mover too fast. -- I think this only
says iphone camera is not professional for such an event.
Happily I met Muyv!!! She is quite tall :) i wished I had sit beside her so
I can hear comments on standard dances...
Muyv, maybe you can write something so we get to hear your side of story.
Here is half of my report:
1. I didn't like joanna leunas and Michael; you know that, right? But
somehow i was impressed by joanna this time. She is exceptional in certain
things - sharp response and clean movement and precise control of body. she
is good for acrobat. the style is a bit futurist. I still maintain my
opition that her Latin is not Latin enough. But for the show dances, they
were impressive.
2. Bryan and Carmen danced, to my surprise that they would accept the
invitation to dance. Both of them were not as good as in those days, of
course, but still the chrisma was there. he is better than her. she gained
weight. he had gained weight and now he lost some of it.
3. Now sergey and melia. Before the show, I heard it again that her
performance is exceptional, which makes you tolerate her weak technique.
That is not working for me. She is still weak as a dancer, compared with
other ladies ranked at her level. Yes her emotional side is strong, but to
me, certain thing look not cordinated. Sergey is just charming charming
charming! Personally I think he is similar to Slavik - slavik is still
better, honestly. Sergey has gained weight since his early years, so now
certain movement is not as easy as before, i feel. Still he is so handsome!
4. victor and hanna. I watched their showdances on youtube - amazing. but it
's even more amazing watch alive! She is so good! Victor is not as tall as i
thought.
The most exciting moment: after the show, I squeezed into the crowd, and
managed to take picture with sergey and melia, hanna and victor!!!!! Of
course sergey is one I really need a picture for, and hanna is the 2nd one :
) Sergey is as tall as slavik. Melia is little taller than me (2-3 cm
taller?) Hanna is my height, i think. So victor is not tall, you can see now
.
I heard there will be dvd coming out priced at $175.

Well, one of the highlight is that I get to meet aurae! The first NYC dance
board personnel I've ever met!
Regarding the show, the interesting part would be that I actually enjoyed
the latin dances more than the standard dances. And I'm actually not
surprised by this either.
I've never seen Bryan and Carmen dance before. Glad that i got a chance.
They are obviously not in prime competing condition any more, but still just
great to watch, and the added grace and confidence because of experience
and age is a joy to witness. I'm glad they danced.
I really liked michael and Joanna's performances. Much more than last time I
see them (around 2010 I think). I'm not sure if it's because they changed
the choreography, or is it because their pieces are just much more suitable
on a stage than on a competition show setting. And yes, their pieces are
more futuristic. And that's one of the reasons I loved their show. They are
the world champions, doing a show. There is no limitations other the those
that they impose on themselves, It's good to see something different.
In some sense, ballroom dances (both latin and standard) have so much rules
or conventional heritage that it sometimes limits the creativity of things,
It's refreshing to see people bringing in new ideas and creating new pieces
(in high quality!).
So due to the same reasoning, but as an counter example, I think the
standard shows are a little unmemorable in comparison. I mean they are still
very very good, but they don't keep my attention as much as the two Latin
couples that I like.
One of the dances that stood out for me was Domenico Soale & Gioia Cerasoli'
s foxtrot. 20+ years of partnership really shows! And Victor and Anastasia's
Tango was quite impressive too.
Domenico Soale & Gioia Cerasoli's quickstep was what I looked forward to,
but even though they did all of their signature leaps and runs, it somehow
didn't have the Wow effect as on seen on the competition videos.
The world champion, Katusha and Arunas was impeccable, (even when she got
her dress caught in her heels) but I was more impressed when I see her
demonstration in lectures, not because she danced better in lectures, but
because at lectures, the techniques were more predominant to obverse, and in
the show I don't tend to focus on techniques.
In general, I regard standard as a dance mainly for the enjoyment of the
participant, as compared to latin being a more showy dance. Standard, to me,
is largely a conversation between the two person dancing it. Audiences just
happened to be there to observe. It's still a beautiful thing to behold,
but it's much more subtle and requires a bit more patience to appreciate. (
And that explains why I dance standard, but watch Lain :P )

I love your comments on the dances! You should write more here. Next time we
have go watch dancing together!
I somehow feel Giampiero's new partner catarina is not as good as anna
mikhed. I respect her as a top dancer 10 years ago, but... Giamperio did a
waltz show dance using the same music with anna. I feel so much emotion from
anna, but I don't feel that from catarina. Am I too harsh?

I think there is no doubt that what Anna did with gp is better than caterina
's performance this weekend. Much better. But we probably shouldn't expect
someone who's retired for 10 years dancing at the same level as a recent
finalist. It is courageous of caterina to try to perform again after off
from the dance floor for more than a decade. I wish she had more time to get
back to her peak condition though. I think they had only a few days to put
4 dances together.
The other part is that caterina is from an older generation of dancers. The
frame, the girl's shape has gotten bigger since 10 years ago. While I
personally don't think the bigger frame is necessarily a good thing, you can
definitely see this change, looking at her vs the current competing couples.
and yes, let's go watching dancing together next time!

I am sure aurae is happier after reading your comment, especially on the
Latin couples. :)
Are you saying story telling of standard dances is less visible than that of
Latin dances because of the "conversation factor?" Is that because of the
close hold (vs open hold positions) that limits a lot of movements?

yes, i saw franco's new partner. i saw her dance with her then partner (now
hubby?). it was great then. They did a show recently - which looks terrible.
.. It is another slavik-hanna combo. I don't see any future for them. sorry
to be harsh again.
Recall that bryan and carmen retired for only 2-3 years? They performed in
new york. i definitely see their competitiveness decreased.
so a partner who retired 7 or 8 years ago?
