Application Locks & Multi-task Scheduling
In a highly concurrent large scale data processing/ETL system, there might
be more than hundreds or thousands business processes solving same or
different problems waiting to be executed. Running them concurrently with
proper degree of parallelism is the key to generate better throughput. In
such systems, most of the time, launching one or more processes have to wait
for the completion of multiple other concurrent processes. Scheduling them
can be complex.
Application lock, the same mechanism SQL Server uses to manage concurrency
of processes, which has also been ignore for more than a decade, can help
simplify the design of multiple task scheduling systems that create mutex
and semaphore, signal one or group of processes from another process, as
well as arrange processes to run in a desired order. Join me and discuss!

John Huang is a Vancouver based independent SQL Server consultant
