All the blocks will be removed for the GOP's implementation of new
immigration policies for the next four years. The incoming new President
Donald Trump promised to support for the "legal" immigration and structly
enforce immigration laws against "undocumented" immigrants. Accordingly,
undocumented immigrant community, including DACA, will face gloomy future
ahead. For the legal immigration, the new government may introduce and
implement some reform of the current broken immigration systems, but within
a narrow bound for "new" legal immigrants since the Republican party's
traditional platform was tightly confined within "restrictive" immigration
platform. In the legal immigration system, the family-based immigration may
face steeper restriction, but even employment-based immigration system is
likely confined into a narrow wall under the forthcoming restrictive trade
policy and "America First" labor policy.
One thing the immigrant community should watch includes the growing internal
struggle, fight, and conflict among different immigrant groups who will
otherwise not be able to achieve improvement for their immigration
opportunities within the restrictive and confined/limited immigration
numbers under the GOP platform unless they hurt other competiting immigrant
groups. The immigration bills of the GOP have always proposed two
conditional concepts. On the one hand, it has been proposing certain
nonimmigrant or immigrant visa numbers for certain immigrant groups by
slashing off other immigration groups. The most typical illustrations in the
GOP piecemeal immigration reform proposals included, among others, to
remove diversity immigration and allocate those 50,000 numbers to other
legal immigration groups or to reduce the immigrant visa numbers for family-
based immigration and increase the immigration visa numbers for employment-
based immigration numbers in order to keep a cap for total immigration
numbers, etc. etc. etc. This will be a sad part of the new development among
immigration groups for the next several years.
Good news will be increased opportunity for immigration reforms within the
GOP platform since the three branches of the federal government will be
controlled by one and same political party.
