a version I am thinking about is networked and software configurable sockets
, light switches, or lights, etc. mostly for commercial buildings but can
also be used for residential buildings.
you basically wire every socket/switch/light/etc. to a bus control'd by a
controller. each device on the bus is addressable by the controller. and you
can program how a given fixture is controlled by which devices on the bus.

From what I have heard, people are thinking of storing renewable energy
generated by wind, etc. off the peak demand hours and use it when
demand is high. So energy storage is very important. Unfortunately,
current battery technology is not as powerful. Also in terms of
protection, it needs a capability of fault-tolerance and surge-
protection.
I'm just wondering if there is anybody working in this area that
can give us some in

there are many problems with renewable energy but the one concerning
grid is that unlike conventional power sources, the generation of wind
power, for example, is over an area, not a point. So you will have to
build a "local grid" to hook up the wind turbines.
On top of that, turbine farms are typically build where few people live.
That means there is no existing transmission lines, or transmission
lines of enough capacity, to transmit out power generated from a turbine
farm.

另外你说we will never see renewable energy sources like wind
/ solar to be a dominant and economical power source。
偶个人看法是现在下结论太早，尤其是solar，如果解决存储的问题，
solar是很有前途的。
