reputation Purdue is far more better than Davis. But the professor gave me
offer is a IEEE fellow and all of his graduated student went to big name
companies. I am struggling where to go. Any opinions would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks! |

while Davis 38.....
If the rank difference is more than 10, its ranking should be more important
than the other things. College ranking is useless as long as they stay in a
reasonable range.
As for the location, for Ph.D., it is not that important while it is truly
important for masters... If you are more inclined to go to small companies
and start-ups, location is important. But anyway I can feel that the life
at UCDavis should be much much better than that at Purdue. So, it is
actually a trade-off between an enjoyable life and a good reputation...... |

universities just because people believe the corn field sucks and LOCATION
is sooo much more important than anything else. If it is UIUC instead of
Purdue, will these guys still choose Davis? I really doubt. Don't say that
UIUC has a much better location than Purdue. On the other hand, is the
location of Davis really that good? It is near SF but still in the farms,
just like Purdue in the corn field but near Chicago and Indy. For an EE PhD
student, most of your time will be spent on your course work and researches
in your lab or your apartment. I don't think you will have much spare time
having fun.
As for job hunting, Purdue has a very good reputation in the industry and a
huge alumni network. You can go to Qualcomm or other big companies and count
how many Purduers there. For your case, my suggestion is: seriously consider
what you really want and what you really wanna do. Are you really
interested in wireless networking? Because you got a TA from Purdue, you are
free to choose another research area and professors.

发帖数: 9806 | 23 五年前我也是在purdue和davis之间犹豫，最后还是选择了davis。我的建议是：
1. 首先确定你的导师是否nice，davis的ECE有一些老师可能比较push，另外ECE有些内
部政治斗争问题，你最好找师兄师姐们确认一下，至少自己导师不要属于混不下去的少
数派就好...
2. 搞明白你以后要不要做学术。Davis的一大好处是离硅谷比较近，离intel在folsom
的site也很近，所以实习相对好找。不过正如你说的，davis不算是传统的工科牛校。
3. 老师是不是IEEE fellow不说明任何问题。Davis这个档次的学校里，IEEE fellow都
好多，相信purdue更多。要说研究水平的话，我感觉很多年轻老师视野更开阔一点。
4. 最后，但其实是最重要的一点。加州的天气真的很不错。我在davis这几年，最大的
体会就是，选一个好老师远不如选一个好天气重要。

about a distant suburb of Sacramento? Plus it gets really hot in summer.
Having a nice adviser will make your life much better. Being in Davis will
not.

片玉米地中，绝对是对青春的摧残
总的来说中西部学校是趋于萎靡的，中西部的生活是无聊的
