work is just OK and she worried a lot if the advisor would let her graduate
before he agreed. She consciously networks and nurtures networking since
early last year at various avenues. So far she got several on-site
interviews (some are from top places), more than anyone around. Networking
is probably the weakest part for us Chinese. If you are not a star candidate

A few years ago, a female Iranian postdoc got 3 interviews all through
former postdocs in our department. This girl is a very nice girl, very good
at communication, and a good friend of mine. Her credential is extremely
weak, but she is the kind of people you know that will get offer if s/he got
interviews. She got 3 offers in the end...

Associate Dean, who is also an African American. The dean arranged an
interview for her, earlier than the search committee make decision on the on
-sites. The girl thinks she will surely get an offer from this school...

多半还是人家为了搞equal opportunity面子工程才给这个机会.
这样跟search committee也有交代.
要是老中,认识Dean也没用.因为没有为你开例外的借口.

不知道什么学校这么牛掰.
一般的地方要是search committee不推荐,就连dean本人一般都不overrule.
更别提什么associate dean了.

not pointed to her. I just use her example to make a general point.
While I'm not jealous about her, I now better understand why people are
unhappy about AA. Personally, I feel how important the networking is.

所以对院里来说，只要这人水平还行，不招白不招
