nothing before this noon. I did quite some searches on the Internet and
learned many valuable lessons. The bottom line is to figure out what I need
to start up my research and how much they cost. I regretted I didn't pay
attention to these details before I attended the interviews. So I am giving
a list of items that I can think of during this afternoon's brain storming,
from the perspective of a science and engineering discipline. I hope faculty
members here would like to share their experiences to enrich this list:
* Base salary and relocation cost
* Summary salary. How many summers can be paid from the startup?
* Student support. How many research assistants, for how many years, can be
paid from the startup?
* Office equipment: computer, printer, fax machine. Note they are not just
used by you; your students may also need them
* Office/lab space
* Equipment related to specific research (e.g., if you work on HPC, do you
want to build your own computer cluster?)
* Software license
* Teaching load for the first two years
* Travel support
* Other miscellaneous costs, such as book purchase, publication fees, and
society membership fees. I believe that even for grants, a lot of these
items cannot be covered in the usual manner; they have to be reimbursed
through overheads. So think carefully when you negotiate your startup
package
