I think a team may choose to kick a field goal anywhere if applicable.
It's not necessary in opponent's territory. But there is a statistic
probability to goal by field goal for each kicker. So they would like
to kick a field goal when the ball is close to opponent's goal line
(<40 yards).
Longest Field Goal History
63 Tom Dempsey, New Orleans vs. Detroit, Nov. 8, 1970
Jason Elam, Denver vs. Jacksonville, Oct. 25, 1998
60 Steve Cox, Cleveland vs. Cincinnati, Oct. 21, 1984
Morten Andersen, | g******a 发帖数: 667 | 2 the problem of kicking a long field goal, is that if you miss it,
the opponent gets the ball and will start their offense in the spot
where the field goal is attempted.
Roughly, if you attend a 47-yd field goal and miss it, your opponent
will start their offense in their own 37 (remember the end zone is 10
yard deep).
This, together with the fact that most kicker cannot kick consistently
over 50 yrds makes it rare for a team to attempt a 50+ yrd field goal
unless absolutely necessary.
