play for team A only (if he was to play at all) to for team B only ...
Even an active player already under contract can choose not to play for the new team after being
traded, even though the new team now owns his contract and his right exclusively.
He just cannot play for any other team, or, as you put it, "no other team can sign him."
The end results are the same.
