Teen killed in shooting outside Detroit high school

Detroit - A shooting just outside of Martin Luther King Jr. High School
Friday evening has left one teen dead and another teen hospitalized.
According to reports, a 70-year-old man believed to be the girls basketball
coach, was walking out from the school around 7:15 p.m. when two male teens
approached and announced a hold up. The man brought out his own weapon and
shot the two teens. One teen was killed and the second teen, a 16-year-old,
was taken to a local hospital and listed in serious condition.
The 70-year-old man was taken into custody. He has a valid concealed pistol
license. Detroit Police have not identified any of the individuals involved
and the incident is currently under investigation.

"This headline and article starts out sounding like innocents were shot,
rather than two criminals who put a gun to a basketball coach's face while
he was escorting two of his players to their cars (presumably BECAUSE the
environment is dangerous at night) saving his and his player's lives."

70-Year-Old Detroit High School Girls' Basketball Coach Shoots Attackers
The 70-year-old girls' basketball coach of a Detroit high school shot two
teenage attackers who tried to rob him as he was escorting two players to
their cars, police said.
The coach was allegedly approached by two men who brandished a gun at him as
he was walking two players to their cars near Martin Luther King Jr. Senior
High School Friday night, ABC's Detroit affiliate WXYZ-TV reported.
The coach, who police said has a concealed pistol license and is reportedly
a reserve police officer, then pulled out his gun and shot at his attackers.
One of the attackers died from the shooting, while the other was rushed to
the hospital, WXYZ reported.
Both of the coach's alleged attackers attended Martin Luther King Jr. Senior
High School, but one of the students had recently been expelled and was not
allowed to be on school grounds, WXYZ reported.
The coach was not a teacher at the school

Police sources told our Scripps sister station WXYZ TV the coach was walking
the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one
pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then
pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources.
