For most people, I presume, the phrase "Hawaiian music" would
typically bring to mind the whiny sound of a lap steel guitar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjZyZ8IuSzw
Of course, we all realize that the history of this particular style of
music is rather short, since it is the result of adoption by native
Hawaiians of a musical vocabulary and instruments that were
introduced to the islands by Europeans and Americans after 1778.
The "real" Hawaiian music, rooted deeply in at least 2,000 years
of cultural tradition, sounds rather like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJeJodoZgew
The Hawaiian chant, as it is known today, is very much alive and
well on the islands, thanks in no small measure to the preservation
efforts by the famed and influential native Hawaiian renaissance
man, John Keolamaka'ainanakalahuiokalaniokamehamehaekolu Lake
(1937-2008), who performed the little piece above. A somewhat
different example below, sung by a group called Halau O Kekuhi,
demonstrates a more performance-oriented style of the chant that
has been gaining increasing popularity among "regular folks" like us:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA8oWS9mgo4
To me, this is what the phrase "Hawaiian music" really means. In
contrast to modern Hawaiian music, which tends to be shiny like
metal and smooth like water, the traditional chant is characterized
by the texture of wood, the scent of earth, and the passion of fire—
exactly what I look for in good, old-fashioned folk music. But if it
fails to appeal to you because it is not contemporary enough for
your taste, do not worry. There are always the further "modernized"
New Age versions of the chant:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xZ4Iso7qF4
Perhaps the most famous of all recorded Hawaiian chant verses is "I
Ku Mau Mau," which, together with Queen Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe"
(the first piece above), serves as something of a "national anthem"
for the native Hawaiians. The full text of the chant is as follows:
Alaka'i: I ku mau mau
Pane: I ku wa
Alaka'i: I ku mau mau
I ku huluhulu
I ka lanawao
Pane: I ku wa
Alaka'i: I ku lanawao
Pane: I ku wa
I ku wa huki
I ku wa ko
I ku wa a mau
A mau ka eulu
E huki e
Kulia
English translation:
Leader: Stand up together
Response: Stand and shout
Leader: Stand together
Haul with all your might
Under the mighty trees
Response: Stand and shout
Leader: Stand up among the tall forest trees
Response: Stand at intervals
Stand at intervals and pull
Stand at intervals and haul
Stand in place and haul
Haul branches and all
Haul now
Stand up
According to one source, these verses were usually "sung when
the great logs for canoes and/or heiau idols were hauled. The
spirit of the chant calls for the joining together of people for a
single purpose." It is little wonder, thus, that "I Ku Mau Mau" is
often used as a "battle cry" by native Hawaiian activists in political
and social gatherings, especially given the loaded meaning of the
chant.
To me, though, it remains little more than a wonderful piece of
folk music, refreshingly masculine in contrast to the more feminine
character of modern Hawaiian music. In the following recording, "I
Ku Mau Mau" is used to introduce and accompany "Kaulana Na Pau,"
one of my favorite Hawaiian songs in its own right:

Now, what would you say if I nominate "I Ku Mau Mau" to be the
official anthem of this board, under the goddess Pele, indivisible,
with merriness and fun for all? :-)

Thanks! I just *love* the traditional Hawaiian chant—and the modern
Hawaiian music, too.
