你考古一下shhyoung 和 ssaanndd在板上发的文章和petition letter，那里面说得很
明白。
简单说来，就是到ISI web of science, 到topic一栏填入关键字，在published year
填上你
文章发表的时间，然后search看看出来的所有文章中你的文章是不是被引用次数最多的
之一；调整
topic一栏的关键字，尽量让你的文章排名越高越好，或者top%越小越好。

腐败归来，除了刚拿到信的时候咆哮了几声，现在好像也没什么感觉了，140这个浪费生命的东西，
还是早点开始早点结束的好。先补充一下背景，明天再说说感想，希望队大家会有帮助
背景：
1.US PhD, engineering; now a researcher/engineer in company
2. 8 journal papers, 1 book chapter (5 first authored),several
conference abstracts; the latest paper was published in 2009; the latest
1st-author paper published in 2007;
3. 3 patent disclosures (no application # yet), not publication, just
used to support "continue to work in the area of extraordinary ability"
4. five 1st-authored Top 25 Hottest of Sciencedirect
5. one 2nd-authored paper most-cited, most-accessed, hot paper for
multiple years.
6. ISI independent citation ~425 (hot topic...)
7. 5 reference letters for contributions: 2 US, two Europe, one Asia.
(all independent; 1 from industry, 2 from university, 2 from national
research institute; 推荐信跟以前一样，二进宫没有提交phd老板的推荐信).
8. 38 reviews from 12 journals
9. one support letter from editor regarding my selection as judge and my
review work ; one reference letter mentioned in #7 also has paragraphs
commending my review work and qualifications.
10. one letter from current boss in company to support "continue to work
in the area of extraordinary ability".
11. NO media report; NO reward...

修改了一下标题，不希望“大水”误导大家。
关于背景：从09年到现在，我在板上潜水的时间够长了，自我感觉我的背景below average吧，引
用算是一个强点但多是因为当年的课题是hot topic的缘故，而且2/3的引用是由一片二作贡献的。
review也还可以，跟第一次申请比有了长足的进步，但是review其实是最容易论述和提高的一点，
广发“志愿帖”就一定能在较短的时间内得到量的提升。根据我看过的板上的案例和从律师那里咨询到
的，媒体报道和award是最能吸引眼球的移民官最喜欢看到的客观证据。所以这两项强的同学不需要
担心引用的多少。
关于petition letter：本版有很多高人的模板可以借鉴，我主要采用了shhyoung的列证方式
（以图表为主，论述为辅）；当然模板的结构在那里，列证的顺序，内容还得根据自己背景精雕细
琢。除了shhyoung的，我还大力推荐ssaanndd， Doubleminute两位的力作；ssaanndd那个
可以customized的“ISI quality ranking"对我来说很好用;doubleminute的简洁直接也很
有启发。shhyoung, ssaanndd 还有Doubleminute版上大家都能找到，我自己的因为要给朋友
share就不公布了，下面简单例一下结构和我觉得比较特殊的考虑，也许对跟我背景相似的朋友有
用：
I. I AM AN ALIEN OF EXTRAORDINARY ABILITY
A. EXCEPTIONAL AUTHORSHIP
I have authored 17 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapter, and
conference presentations published in five different internationally
recognized journals, one book series, and six different scientific
events. [因为我只有8篇journal文章，就索性把会议的东西给揉到了一起，给出一个总数，这里
也是我唯一次提到publication总数量。]

your work on scholarly research globally"，所以我也被用上了小吹了一番；不知道有
多大作用，但是我在第一申请回复RFE就有使用，结果还是悲剧。]

B. SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS

earlier in the section A, my original contributions have generated

thesis, and applied to the development of proprietary commercial
technologies of corporation.

有quote任何推荐信；二是我老板是某杂志主编，而这个杂志是我主要review的杂志之一

C. JUDGING THE WORK OF OTHER SCIENTISTS
1. I have been consistently called upon to serve as a judge for
many leading international journals to critique the work of others for
accuracy, innovativeness, and importance to the field.

[有几篇文章给了major revision编辑让重申revised version,从the author feedback
里找了一些作者认可我点评的句子]
另外关于review，板上常有人问提交什么证据，invitation letter 和 thank you letter
都可以，但是我为了刻意回避老板是某杂志主编可能给我申请带来的副作用，我用的是我review提
交以后的打印页。这里还有一个好处是，我行文罗嗦，review comment通常1.5到2页，打印我的
comment有可能显示我工作的认真，IO可能会认为这人能密密麻麻提出这么多看法，应该还是有一定
水平的，而不是regular research activity.
关于律师：2010年我第一次申请请了中国律师，感觉他们还是很负责的，但是也很刻板，坚持他们的
惯用格式；律师请来通常是给你省事的，但我偏偏又是劳心的人，写了20多页的personal
summary（律师的模板只有5页）供他们起草推荐信，但其实最后被用到的内容不超过20%；在他们
起草petition letter之前，我又按照板上的经验精心总结n页论据，结果被用量不超过5%；因为
我第一次申请曲折颇多，NOID 和 RFE 都有碰到，对于怎么回复和证据的使用，跟律师也是频起摩
擦，有时真是身心俱疲，但还得表面上和气一片，因为案子毕竟是自己的，他们大不了不拿approve
以后的费用，但损失的时间和精力却是自己的；到我第一次申请最终悲剧，律师还表达对我干涉他们
工作过多的不满。。。所以关于律师，如果你象我一样喜欢操心劳神，那么最好还是DIY，这样一切
尽在掌握，就算你请律师是为了省时间，你会发现你其实花掉了更多的时间；否则的话，律师还是不
错的选择，不得不承认他们的文笔还是不错得，最大的好处是=你的summary一旦完成，你的case就
上了日程，不象DIY得不断自我监督检讨，或者需要LD帮助来保证进程。。。case比较弱的也建议上
DIY，因为只有精心的包装才能提高你的机会，最精心的包装才能把你的机会提高到极限，而只有你
自己才会给自己最精心的包装，从petition letter 到 exhibit 到 assemble...
关于PP：很让人纠结的一个问题。律师都强烈不建议PP，这里有私因也有公因，PP更容易招惹
RFE/NOID可能是一个事实，但是等上5，6个月甚至更长的时间被RFE/NOID也是多不胜数，我更愿
意相信板上曾经某个ID的高论”决定该不该PP的不是你的case够不够强，而是你的材料组织的够不够
好“。这里我理解的”好“可以概括为”逻辑清晰，可读性强，包装到位“。很多时候早一点知道结果比
结果本身更重要。
用心就有好运气，希望大家一切顺利
