for mine, if I connect the pc with cable modem directly, the light of my PCI
adapter is on. that means the connection is ok. but while I connect the pc
with the router, the light of both router and PCI adapter blink. and the pc
can't find the router. what could be the problem?

configuration for your PC and router. While you connect with cable modem, IP
of your PC should be set to the public IP provided by Roadrunner. If you are
connecting through router, your IP should be either private (192.168.0.*) or
from DHCP, depending on configuration of router.
BTW, what do you mean everything is OK for your roommate? Is (s)he able to
switch back and forward from modem and router w/o changing any configuration
