does anybody know if it is possible to use a router as a switch?
there are some routers that "with 4 ports switch". this kind can be used as a
switch since it has a uplink port.
but how about those with only WAN port and 4 other LAN port? is there any
configuration to make it work as a switch?

~~~~~~~~~~~ I assume you want to connect the switch
to another switch/hub/router? If so, just use a cross-over cable on any of
the LAN ports. It's the same thing.

there are 3 computers in one room. there is a jack on the wall of that room
through which connections go out. i do not know what is behind the wall
(either a switch or a router).
there is server computer in another room (in fact, in another floor of that
building). and i want to connect the 3 computers to be able to BROWSE the
server.
i can ping and net use the server from the 3 computers but can not browse
because they are behind the router and in different subnet from the serv

You have three computers in one room, all connected to the LAN side of a
router/switch combo device. The WAN port of the router is connected to a
socket on the wall. A server sits in another room, and is in the same subnet
as the WAN port of the router. Is this correct?
If this is the case, then yes, you can do what you've proposed. Simply plug
the wall-connection to the LAN side of the router/switch device. Put the

发帖数: 10 | 5 If you can ping the server, you don't need any extra hardware - the
connection is already there. You can browse from the same subnet but
cannot from a different one - that means either there's a firewall
or your server setting prevents access from different subnets. You
just need to modify these settings.

one gateway device (likely a router) between his computer and the server. In
other words, the server is not on the same ethernet segment as the client PC.
Otherwise, the server would not be accessable to him using TCP/IP.
Browsing in "Microsoft Network" requires NetBIOS broadcast, which is generally
not forwarded by a router. That is why he wants to turn the router into a
switch, which does forward these broadcasts
