Java (i.e. J2SE) _is_ being perceived as a platform for all the practical
purposes. You know, there _are_ actually lots of people pondering on whether
to build their application with Swing/SWT or .Net. 8-)

If the job requirement says java, it means not only the language itself, but
also the platform, J2EE, and the whole thing.
There's nothing wrong to say Java is a platform.

1. JVM，虚拟指令集
2. SDK，简易的开发工具集
3. Programming Language.
JVM的性能是个问题，但这是个做为软件公司根本不会去花时间的问题。
开发工具上同visual studio.net竞争的不是j2se sdk，而是eclipse, intellij,
netbeans等工具。
至于语言，.net的跨语言实在是个典型的MS产品的特性——听上去特酷，实际毫无价值。
我觉得等到java芯片稳定下来后，企业里将没有.net的应用。

Not many companies are using different languages to build one application,
even web services and .NET make this easier.
Eventually MS has to realize there's no way they can destroy linux and starts
supporting linux for .NET.

just like many JVM-based langauges can never gain popularity.
technically it is true that .Net support language variations better
than java; but this is nontheless mainly marketing hype and totally
irrelavant to normal developers.
Sun legally controls java, and MS practically controls C#,
the difference at bytecode level has no effect to language evolution.
