Digital Communications
MERL is seeking a highly self-motivated, qualified researcher to join our
dynamic team to carry out fundamental and applied research in the area of
advanced power electronics. The ideal candidate should have a strong
background in the research, simulation, design of advanced power electronics
including power converter modules, control theory and circuitry, and
numerical simulation. Proficiency in semiconductor power device design and
modeling, electromagnetics and thermal analysis would be a great asset. The
selected candidate is expected to conduct independent research, develop
analytical and numerical models, and perform experimental studies.
Candidates who hold a Ph.D. and with more than one year of post-doctorate or
industrial experience in relevant areas are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in electrical engineering or related fields from a well-recognized
institution.
A balance of theoretical and practical orientation.
Strong experience in power system, control theory and numerical simulation.
Knowledge of power device modeling, design and fabrication, and thermal
modeling and management.
Software and hardware development skills related to design of power
electronics.
Proven ability to generate and publish fundamental innovations.
Relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience is an asset.

power amplifier and transmitter design. The ideal candidate should have a
strong background in the research, simulation and design of RF power
amplifiers, RF front-end optimization and control algorithms, and is
expected to be well versed in the various RF front-end architectures of a
radio transceiver. Proficiency in RF power semiconductor device and modeling
, including thermal modeling and management would be an asset. The selected
candidate is expected to conduct independent research, develop analytical
and numerical models and build prototypes to prove feasibility of concept.
Candidates who hold a PhD and preferably with more than one year of post-
doctorate or industrial experience in relevant areas are encouraged to apply
.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in electrical engineering or related fields from a well-recognized
institution.
A balance of theoretical and practical orientation. Strong analytical skill
as well as hands-on hardware prototyping experience in RFIC, modules and/or
subsystems.
Solid background in microwave theory, high frequency circuit theory and
design, and control theory.
Broad knowledge in RF amplifier device design, RF front-end design,
transmitter and receiver architecture.
Detailed knowledge of wireless communication standards and systems would be
an asset.
Proven ability to generate and publish fundamental innovations.
Relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience is an asset.

MERL is seeking a highly self-motivated, qualified researcher to join our
team to perform cutting-edge research in the area of optical communications
systems. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in the
research, advanced technology development, simulation and experimental
verification of next generation optical communication systems at the
physical layer. Extensive knowledge of digital coherent optical technologies
, including electronic signal processing would be a great asset.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead and perform original
research within the above areas, and to extend MERL's domain of expertise.
Further responsibilities and qualifications are defined below.
Responsibilities:
Conceive new ideas and conduct innovative research and technology
development in optical communications systems.
Publish research in leading technical journals, conferences and patent
applications.
Create project proposals and lead research projects.
Collaborate with corporate R&D laboratories and academic groups.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. from an internationally recognized institution in electrical
engineering or a related field.
At least three years of post-Ph.D. industrial and/or academic experience.
Documented track record of creative innovation and of developing, conducting
, and leading successful research projects.
Strong background in the theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental
verification of optical communications systems at the physical layer.
Knowledge of optical system architecture at the datalink layer and above
would be an asset.
Excellent programming skills (C/C++ and Matlab) are required.
Ability to handle multiple simultaneous assignments and balance workload
among different projects.
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills are essential. Good presentation
and written communications skills are required.
