Netflix shares closed up 13 percent Friday, apparently because of rumors
that Microsoft is interested in acquiring it.
Forbes and Benzinga reported on the rumor, though it’s not clear where it
came from or how much weight there is to it.
According to Forbes, the rumor likely comes from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings'
decision earlier this month to step down from Microsoft’s board of
directors.
Benzinga says that Netflix could be an acquisition target because it has
lost a significant amount of its value over the last year, is facing more
competition than ever, and is having a harder time getting studios to
license their content.
But despite its challenges, Netflix is still a valuable brand. Forbes said
it could help Microsoft in its efforts to make the Xbox more of an
entertainment device than a video game console.
Netflix's stock closed at $69.58, up $8.07.
