Research Engineer – Computational Advertising

Do you enjoy solving challenging and complex problems? Are you passionate

Yahoo! Labs Beijing is the youngest lab in the family of Yahoo! Labs world-
wide. Our mission is to improve, revolute, and invent Yahoo's Internet
products through deep science and technology. We are building world-class
teams and expertise on four fields: product-driven sciences; large scale
research infrastructure and engineering; deep science driven product
innovation; and long-term research and academic relationship.
Some of the prominent research projects we’re working on in the Beijing
Labs include:
• Computational advertising: The central challenge here is to find
the best ad to present to a user engaged in a given context. Selecting an ad
which improves the user’s Web-experience while maximizing revenue is a non
-trivial challenge. It involves identifying the right audience who may be
interested in your product and ready to buy it, quantifying relevance
between an ad and its context and predicting click through rates. This being
a nascent area, there is tremendous scope for new algorithms that perform
and scale better. Our goal is to apply scientific methodology and state-of-
the-art technology to display and search advertising to optimize
monetization of web traffic.
• Multimedia search: Increasingly, users of the Web are drawn to
interesting multimedia content in the form of images and videos. Flickr
alone has a sizable fraction of all the images on the Web. Our research
aims to answer questions like: How do we retrieve the most relevant
multimedia content taking into account both content features and metadata (e
.g., tags)? How do we find similar or related content – across music, image
, and video databases – when we have billions of objects?
• Social network and data analysis: Social networking sites like
Facebook are gaining in popularity in today’s Web. Our research focuses on
analyzing the social graphs underlying mail, IM and social networking sites
to find influencers, filter out spam, and recommend ads, topics and people
to users based on their connections. Another interesting trend on the Web is
the rapid growth of user-generated content in the form of blogs, article
comments, ratings and reviews, photos, etc. Ranking, summarizing, detecting
abuse, and analyzing the sentiment of the vast amounts of user-generated
content poses a non-trivial research challenge.
• Web information extraction and Query Analysis: The Web is a vast
repository of human knowledge. Consequently, extracting structured data (e.g
., hyperlocal events, places etc.) from Web pages can lead to better ranking
and presentation of search results. We are developing wrapper induction and
machine learning techniques that leverage page structure, content features,
and content redundancy for structured information extraction. We are also
addressing the hard research problems of de-duplicating extracted records,
and integrating records for the same entity from multiple sources. Query
analysis involves deep linguistic processing of queries. We are also
building a platform that allows a variety of applications to leverage rich
information in search results to enhance query understanding.
We are looking for research engineers to work alongside our world-class
scientists to ensure state-of-the-art scientific excellence in Yahoo!
products. Research engineers in Yahoo! Labs are responsible for
implementation and development including key algorithms, data processing and
analysis on several types of projects, such as building data processing
pipeline to generate features/model data used by backend serving components,
implementing algorithms in serving code to consume the data, and evolving
software and models leading to improved product metrics.
In this position you will be working together with our scientists to develop
novel software engineering solutions for problems in information retrieval,
machine learning, or data mining. You will develop end-to-end data mining
pipelines for extracting and utilizing user insights from logs, train and
deliver machine learned models, as well as assist with running experiments
and analyzing the results. The successful candidate will be passionate about
software engineering yet able to thrive in a dynamic, production-focused
research environment.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or Math
• 2+ years related industry experience
• Certain understanding of statistics, machine learning, data
mining, information retrieval
• Demonstrated proficiency in Java or C++, and scripting languages
such as Python, Perl
Preferable Job Qualifications:
• Industrial experience on paid search, contextual advertising or
display advertising
• First-hand experience of applying machine learning algorithms to
real-world problems
• Familiarity with large-scale, distributed systems backend
architecture and development
• Basic understanding of Hadoop and/or MapReduce
• Ability to interpret research results and transform into
innovative, consumer-facing products
• System building experience
