Assistant Director, Foundation Partnerships
UNICEF USA is seeking an Assistant Director to support its portfolio of
partners and grants within the Foundation Partnerships team.
Foundation Partnerships works with leading U. S. private foundations and
institutions in support of various cross-cutting areas of UNICEF’s work,
including Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition, Polio Eradication,
Institutional Strengthening, Water/Sanitation & Hygiene, Education, Disaster
Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Child Protection & Social Inclusion,
Advocacy (Domestic & Global), Public-Private Partnerships and other Special
Initiatives based on UNICEF’s and UNICEF USA’s common mission of saving
and improving the lives of children worldwide.
Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to):
Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director will assist in managing
and growing a portfolio of grants/grant-based initiatives that effectively
leverage leading global health, nutrition and development partners in
support of UNICEF’s program and advocacy goals. In addition, the Assistant
Director is responsible for cultivating relationships and identifying
opportunities that can be leveraged to broaden and deepen support for UNICEF
’s efforts on behalf of the world’s children.
The Assistant Director, Foundation Partnerships will:
Implement the team’s Business Development Strategy to achieve revenue
targets defined in the UNICEF USA strategic plan in collaboration with the
Director and the team, by cultivating and building “best of class”
alliances with US-based foundations and institutions
Identify and develop new strategic and collaborative funding opportunities/
initiatives with current and potential partners
Formulate and implement individual plans and strategies for developing key
partnerships and initiatives under the programmatic work areas defined above
, coordinating necessary internal and external resources to ensure all grant
programs are effectively executed and partners’ needs are fully met
Demonstrate and deploy good working knowledge of UNICEF’s global role as it
relates to the programmatic work areas defined above, in writing and in
person
Collaborate with UNICEF USA departments on cross-organizational special
projects, initiatives, and lead special projects, as appropriate
Contribute to grants development/grants management, develop and manage grant
agreements, sub-awards and contracts for non-UNICEF implementing partners
Grants Management
Serve as administrative and financial manager over the lifetime of assigned
projects, tracking implementation progress, funds utilization and progress
toward achievement of project milestones and results
Ensure timely receipt of project deliverables and required reports; prepare
and submit consolidated reports to funders and other internal and external
stakeholders on the progress of UNICEF’s partnerships with foundations
Take a leading role in negotiations of grant agreements and contracts,
conduct due diligence to identify legal, procedural and financial issues for
potential grants prior to proposal submission/approval, and over the life
of multi-year grant-funded projects
Participate in executing partner engagement opportunities per the
programmatic work areas defined above, in coordination with the Foundation
Partnerships Engagement Strategy
Liaise with UNICEF and other internal/external UNICEF USA stakeholders on
key issues under the programmatic work areas defined above, including
individual projects/initiatives. Additionally, serve as an internal resource
to the team and the wider agency on global and sectoral developments within
these work areas
Operations
Contribute to strengthening and further developing the Foundation
Partnerships team’s internal and external “best practice” processes and
mechanisms, including for grants management
Liaise with UNICEF USA finance and compliance personnel to resolve any legal
, procedural or financial issues regarding grants, sub-grants and contracts
Mentor/train junior staff in Foundation Partnerships team on grants
management processes and other key team operations
Business Development
Support and implement new business strategy to drive income growth
Conduct research, analyze data and develop presentations to help formulate
partnership strategies and identify partners and relationships that will
serve the organization’s mission and goals
Represent the UNICEF USA at meetings and conferences to remain appraised of
global health and development trends and issues and explore new
opportunities for engagement
Cultivate new grant opportunities with multiple U. S. foundation partners
and other key internal/external stakeholders
Support communication efforts to engage with current and prospective
partners under the Foundation Partnerships team business development
strategy (e.g., manage outreach to partners, liaise with and coordinate
internal stakeholder groups as needed)
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree strongly preferred in international
development, international relations, global/public health, public policy/
advocacy, economics or a related field
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in developing and managing complex
partnerships with leading U. S./international institutional funding partners
and in private foundation grants cultivation and management, including at
least 3 – 4 years’ experience of successfully achieving funding for/
administering large-scale projects
Knowledge of, and preferably direct experience with, grant-making rules,
regulations and policies of U. S. private foundations as well as federal
grant-making institutions; familiarity with current global health/
development issues, UN agencies
Strong quantitative and analytical skills, excellent communication, and
entrepreneurial thinking. Must be able to formulate strategies and concepts
and influence others
Ability to build relationships with diverse individuals, and direct
experience engaging with program officers, senior-level decision makers and
influencers in foundations / philanthropy community
Significant business development and relationship building skills, and
proven ability to meet revenue targets
Some travel required, within the U.S. and internationally
