What's salary as entry level technical advisor in Texas?
I got a 65K offer recently. It seems a low ball offer for me. Currently I'm
making 100K annually as an electrical engineer.
So it's not that attractive to go to patent field at all?
Any thoughts? |

What's potential salary range if I become a patent agent, or patent attorney
. I'm trying to see pros and cons between engineer job and patent field job.
I just turn 30.

the same in term of living cost.

according to cnn, 60k in Houston is about the same as 100k in dc.
in lz's situation, taking a pay cut from 100k to 65k within Texas is not a
wise move. |

他在TX要是65K起薪的话，起码得2-3年才能追上现在100K的水平，这还是一切顺利的前

遇差距蛮大的，所以我过了bar升到patent agent后薪水有个大的跳跃，大约接近40%把
，主要还是起薪太低了，最初找到这份工作的时候没有别的offer所以没法讨价还价，
当时只有接受这个低起薪，呵呵。

These are several things come on top of my mind
1, increase billable hour (eventually come down to work/life balance
question)
2, increase billing rate (you can't charge a client $1000/hour, right? so in
my case, if my current billing rate is $180/hour, maybe it can be doubled
after I pass patent bar exam or got my law degree?)
3, decrease this ratio(5:1/3:1 --> 1:1) :) (I have no idea on this one)
Any thoughts?

the return is limited. In most firms, the bonus you get for extra hours is
not really worth the effort. for example, if you make $50/hr regularly, the
bonus will be less than 50/hr.
in
that's the most common way. I doubt your rate will double. however, higher
rate means higher pressure. for example, if the budget of a project is 5K,
a person with $200/h rate can work for 25 hours but a person with $600/h
rate can only work for 8 hours, which is unrealistic.
this is not up to you. the firm got to make money, pay for your overhead
and your salary. I think 3:1 is not too bad.
