your standard deduction, you should not claim it at all. In that sense your
mortgage interest has no tax benefit at all. If your itemized deduction is
larger than your standard deduction, only the extra part of interest
ACTUALLY has tax benefit. As a result, for many people, the tax benefit of
mortgage interest is very limited.
