Like we all know, two factors are insulation and ventilation. In case of
Cape, both are difficult. So, next summer, you should seriously consider
installing heating cables in gutters and on the lower parts of roofs. Since
you only need to turn it on during daylight hours after the snow (if the
snow on the upper part is not melting, you don't need to turn it on.), it
won't add a lot on your energy bill.
For now, knock it off :) before the ice dam causes more damage

刚才上去看了看阁楼和房檐都有30/30的insulation. 房檐的入口有insulation block,
阁楼的
入口是推拉的，没有insulation. 打算一会儿去一趟homedepot.
请大家继续建议。

It's very easy to make a cover box for your attic access, using foam boards.
Staples should be more than enough, for quick construction, you can even
only use tapes for now.

and lift up the shingles further and thus allowing more water in. Just a few
such cycles would be enough to fail the shingles, as the first line of
defense.

发帖数: 14763 | 15 Sounds like we need to go back to the principles.
Ice dam forms when the roof temperature is uneven. Say, insulation is not
enough, and the warm room air escapes to the attic or the attic is heated by
other leaks. Since the warm air always go up , the upper part of the roof
is warmer than the lower part. So, the snow on the upper part would melt and
refreeze when it reaches the colder lower part.
Again, the two killer factors, insulation and ventilation. Good insulation (
and air seal) prevents the attic from warming up, and the ventilation tries
to even out the roof temperature.
A few icicles are probably inevitable, but you also don't want excessive
amount of icicles hanging there.
