What kind of animal would dig up a lawn?
This morning I found a huge patch of my lawn in my front yard all dug up.
Not huge holes, but a lot of small ones about an inch deep and a inch wide.
There was about 80 of them all in about a 3 foot circle.. I don't know if it
was some jerk kid, or an animal. I wouldn't think some kid would spend that
much time doing that, so it leads me to believe it was some kind of animal.
. Any ideas?

What you have found is most likely the damage from a SKUNK, not a rabbit,
vole, gopher, mole, squirrel or other. This is how skunks forage for some of
their favorite foods - namely grubs.
Rabbits generally only dig a hole (well, an indentation, actually) when they
are preparing to give birth to their young. And this is only one spot that
is actually very well camouflaged - we often don't see the nests until we're
right on top of them.
Squirrel activity could account for an occasional hole from where they've
hidden food for their winter use. A squirrel would not dig 80 food stores in
such a small area.
Gophers and tunneling rodents leave only one or two entrance and exit holes,
and you would also see telltale tunnels leading around. The area of your
yard would feel very spongy and underground damage would be obvious.
Skunks, however, will do exactly what you described - and chances are, they'
re doing it because your lawn has a grub infestation. Skunks will dig small
"divots" out of your lawn in their search for grubs, which are living at
root level below the grass.
I had the exact same thing happen a couple of times when I lived in the city
- and I woke up to my perfect little lawn looking like a polo match took
place on it. I tamped the divots back in place and watered, and the same
thing happened again the next night! The following night, I actually walked
out on the porch and caught the skunk in action.
What you need to do is get some beneficial nematodes that are designated for
grub control. This is a very safe and very effective organic insect control
if you have a serious grub problem. Please don't freak out and douse your
yard with dangerous chemicals. You can also sprinkle cayenne pepper around
to keep the little bugger off the grass until the nematodes do their work.
Get rid of the grubs, and the skunk will move on - most likely to your
neighbors' yards.
