A search on Mount Baldy is expected to resume
at first light today for an experienced hiker from
Venice who was last heard from Saturday when
she started walking up the steepest trail on the
mountain, authorities said.
The search today for Michelle Yu, 49, is expected
to be focused on San Antonio Canyon, the
drainage below Baldy Bowl, the area around the
San Antonio Ski Hut, a cabin dating back to the
1930s, and Good Canyon, San Bernardino County
sheriff's Sgt. D. Bauman said.
Search organizers confirmed Monday that Yu
started walking up the Ski Hut-Baldy Bowl trail
above Manker Flats and she signed a register
book just above the trailhead at 8:30 a.m.
Saturday.
She indicated her intention was to hike four-
and-a-half miles to Baldy's summit, then come
back down the mountain via a different, ridge-
top trail called the Devil's Backbone to Baldy
Notch, and use the ski lift or its maintenance
road to descend to where her car was parked,
according to search organizers.
But she never returned, and Yu's roommate
reported her missing Sunday.
Searchers found Yu's vehicle parked near Mount
Baldy Road and Falls Road just after 2 p.m.
Sunday, Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino County
Sheriff's Department said.
By 3 p.m. Sunday, a U.S. Forest Ranger and a
sheriff's deputy were stopping hikers coming off
Mount Baldy on a limited-access road above
Manker Flats to ask whether they'd seen the
missing woman.
Sunday afternoon and evening
gusting winds, clouds, rain and snow socked in
parts of the mountain, grounding helicopter
crews and forcing searchers on the ground to
seek shelter.
About 30 volunteers from Los Angeles, San Diego
and San Bernardino counties took part in the
search Monday. Organizers hope for at least that
many participants in the search today.
The weather Monday night was clear, calm and
quiet in the canyons on 10,064-foot Mount
Baldy, without rain or winds, and some searchers
worked after dusk calling her name out, using
whistles and light strobes hoping to get a
response from Yu, search supervisors said.
Late Monday two helicopter crews used night-
vision technology to keep searching until about
midnight.
Unless Yu turns up before dawn, the search for
her is planned to resume at 6 a.m. today.
Yu is experienced in the mountains, but she does
not normally stay out overnight, Miller said. She
knows the weather and terrain on Baldy because
she trains there every Saturday.
She is also a strong woman who sometimes
trains by carrying a pack full of rocks, an
acquaintance told reporters. Her outing Saturday
was part of a training regime for an expedition
in Argentina in the near future.
Anyone with information about Yu was urged to
call San Bernardino County sheriff's dispatchers

and today.
I am puzzled by this event. The most high risk section of her planned route
is the devil's backbone section, esp in the winter. How could she get into
trouble in the bowl area??? I presume there is only light snow in the area.
I think they should interview as many people as possible and make sure they
are looking at all the most possible areas. The chopper will be of great
help. It should scan the peak area and devil's backbone area too, just in
case. Hope weather will hold. | t**********p

experienced -- otherwise it can become a burden to the rescue's team.
But the weather is cooperating with the search as there is no wind or strong
winds yesterday or today, here's to the hope.

This is NONSENSE!
For any able average hikers, the risks on Baldy is minimal. This is NOT 13,
14 thousand feet up in Rockies!

通常first 72小时是最关键的,
由于YU是在大雪环境下,关键时间要短的多,
她背了石头作为负重, 说真的还不如背着真正的装备 | W***n

I said "ABLE average hikers". Btw, they are concentrating their search in the
canyons around the bowl area, not at the top or devil's backbone (which I agree
is not for the unprepared). And the canyons around the bowl have little
risks.
