The traverse from Iron Mountain to Mount Baldy along the San Antonio Ridge
is a San Gabriel mountain classic. Starting at the Heaton Flat trailhead and
ending at Manker Flats will give you about 10,000 feet of elevation gain in
15 miles, the combination of elevation gain and exposed class 3 climbing mak
e this a rather difficult hike.
I've done this ridge once almost two years ago, recently Mike asked me to
join him to do the Iron-Baldy Traverse and Reverse which involving
traversing
this ridge twice in a day, something inspirted by Rick Kent and Rick Graham.
We have talked and discussed about this hike for several months I hesitated
many times due to the unknown snow condition on the ridge and my performance
due to lack of exercise or hike in recent months, but given the warm winter
condition we have this year, i figured this might be the last chance we can
do it before the snow comes in.
Both of us met at the trailhead around 2:40 am and started at Heaton Flat at
3:01am.
Somehow,every time i see this, i can feel the tiredness and it will be a
long day.
I realized i made my #1 mistake on the day when i let Mike lead the hike up
to
Iron and my #2 mistake when i forgot to bring a leash. I tried my best to
ask
him questions to slow him down, but i was still totally wasted when we
summited Iron 4 hours and 10 minutes later at 7:10 am.

We took our much needed rest break at the Iron summit and began the traversi
ng the ridge around 7:30am. The first mile of the ridge from Iron is steep,
loosely rocks and where all the climbing involved.

This time rather than climbing down, we took a shortcut down a gully to avoi
d all the climbing which i still didnt think it saved much time, but we
finished the Notch at 10:20a, almost 3 hours later after leaving Iron summit
.

After the Notch is just up and down of several bumps and pure elevation gain
, the scenery along the ridge is a bonus.
There were rather a lot more buckthorn bushes than 2 years ago on the ridgel
ine closest to the base of West Baldy, i can tell you that it definitely
felt like an acupuncture session.
Once we hit the base of Baldy at 12p and there was still more than 2000ft
gain
up to Baldy, we know that there was no way we can make it back to Iron in
daylight and we werent comfortable doing the climbing at night so we decided
to go down Baldy instead of going back to Iron. Just what were we thinking?
There were patchy of snow and we tried taking the use trail but mostly it
was icy.
I didn't bring crampons nor ice axe, so we had to go through bushes like
this to avoid the icy "use trail"

铁人山对你们这帮牛人太简单了一点, 这么早下山还没有腐败 ...
我真的没有算错， 上周真的是最后一次机会走SA Ridge，
明天开始storm了, 不过总有机会的.
