For metal NPs, I think it is pretty cheap.
For II-VI semiconductors, it depends on the synthesis method.
For example, by thiol molecules as stibilizer for CdTe, it cost only ~1/10 as
the cost by TOPO/metal organic precursors.
I would say, you can make a big money if you can produce inductrial scale,
high quality semiconductors.

I only knew some group use semiconductor nanoparticles to change in-direct
semicondutor to direct semiconductor, although I don't know whether there is
an application for that. Some other groups use semiconductors as quantum dots
