nanoparticles to carry some drug or protein, this kind of arm may do some
favor. And using these arm may also let the nanoparticles form better array. I
saw one guy used atar polymer to form hexagonal structure (100 micron X 100
micron).

In medical application, one important thing is that the NP stuff will not pose
health threat to the patient. Is -SH group harmful to living cell?

If I understand correct, the arm is relative new research topic.
check Alivisatos and Peng's paper in which they made armed CdSe NPs
For metals, I did not see any repot so far.
-SH should be OK.

d****i 发帖数: 360 | 6 "Arm" I used means some kine of chain, several nanometers to hundred
nanometers, attached on the particles at one end, leaving the other end free.
You can have many kinds of functional groups which can carry the drugs or
proteins. I really doubt nanoparticles (inorganic) themselves can carry these
drugs or proteins. And you know most NP (inorganic) is not suit for the living
cell. This looks like some modification of the NP.

I suggest you read Warren chan's paper in science 1998
the basic structure is NP was capped by amine thiol, which is futher linked to
carboxyl modified protein
there are two relatively new papers below:
especially in one paper, the QDs were used "in vitro" and in the other paper,
different colored QDs were selectively labelled in the core and surface of
cancer cell.
or you can refer to Mirkin;s papers, even though he is not in the area of
bio-dot
on this topic:
1、Immunofluo

f**********e 发帖数: 236 | 8 I would not believe QDs like CdSe can ever be used for real "in vivo"
applications, no matter how well you cap it. So the issue is the material of
the nanoparticle core, not the ligands (arms) aroud it. People have been able
to make sort of biocompatible nanoparticles by incorpting PEG and peptides
onto nanoparticle surface, but still there is no way to make them intact in
physilogical conditions for a long time. Nanoparticles with gold or silica
cores are more likely to be used for real in vivo
