x***y 发帖数: 45 | 1 Many CMGs are suffering with few interviews. It would be helpful if we can
clarify where we stand now. Let's discuss the possible reasons that can
reduce FMGs probability of getting matched in general particularly for this
year.
more applicants---- not really if counting less European doctors this year
less spots ---- not significant
favor young applicant ---- how many IVs young applicant got so far?
favor high scores --- how many IVs 99ers got so far?
favor GC?--- how many IVs GC got so far |

out from schools. Last year some AMGs failed to match and it becomes even
more difficult for them to scramble now. This year more programs give AMGs
invites first, even in categorical IM and preliminary medicine. |

I agree more AMGs could be one explanation. Do they also apply to more
programs than before? How many do they apply on average this year and last
year?
I bet IMGs are also applying more programs than before, even some people
with very good credential, and they took a lot of IV spots. do you guys
agree? |
x***y 发帖数: 45 | 4 Hi Eric, thanks for the input. Could you give a rough number of the
increase AMGs this year and AMGs failed to match last year? It will help
most of us estimate our starting point in this race.

b*********n 发帖数: 162 | 6 I heard that more and more FMGs from India, Parkistan and Arabic countires
are applying this year since they can not apply in England and the
environment is not friendly to them in Europe. They took a lot of IVs out of
all IMGs especially in IM and FM. That is why IM and FM are the big hurts
among CMGs this year but not Pathology. Just my 2 cents |
e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 7 There were 522 more students enrolled in MD and DO schools in 2006. Those
are the people for this year's match.
In 2009, more than 13,000 people competed for the 1087 unfilled spots, about
half of these were PGY-1 only positions in preliminary surgery and
preliminary medicine. There were 1072 unmatched AMGs (MD). Even if every AMG
would get these spots, half of them could end up in a one-year only
position.

x***y 发帖数: 45 | 8 I see. So increased AMGs alone will use up more than 25% of FMGs slot. I
know there is some increase in carribean medical grads as well. I think
last year, people got about 6/80 interviews on average. This year we should
get about 3-4/80. In general, 3-4 interviews is not a safe number to go
for match, right?

e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 9 Depending on specialty. For internal medicine match, the mean number of
ranks in 2009 was 8.7 for AMGs and 6.2 for independent applicants. However,
if you shine in one interview you're set. CMGs with strong research
background or extensive clinical experience have some advantages for the
match. The main concerns from programs are English, communication skill and
personality. So do an intensive interview preparation and go out to fight
for your chance.
BTW, this week has been a busy week for us.

e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 11 Thanks. The "dream place" is the one I can "fit in" comfortably and can get
a good training. :)
Internal medicine is easy to match for AMGs. Some of my classmates applied
for 10 programs and already got a good number of invites.

x***y 发帖数: 45 | 12 I totally agree. I want to add one more thing. For CMGs applying internal
medicine. I would suggest accepting prematch offer instead of going for
match regardless of English, communication, personality, scores.

f*****y 发帖数: 53 | 13 Every year, ppl say it is the most difficult year. It is NOT AT ALL
different this year. I happen to know several CMG friends who got quite some
internal medicine interviews/pathology interviews this year. I kind of feel
that jimmyzhang's old post "you are beautiful" is the most important
guideline for CMGs going to match (Don't tell me that you had not read that
old post before you even started STEP1). He almost mentioned every important
factor; and people got most interviews are almost always |
