Answer: Those are all private schools, and only one (Penn) of them is
considered a research intensive university. Based on my knowledge of
academic reputation I will rank them as follows: 1. UPenn; 2. Case Western;
3. Loma Linda; 4. Mercy; 5. ASDOH. But I think more importantly it will
depend on where you want to live and what your career goals are. You will
have no problem to get a license, find a job or open your own practice after
you graduate from any of those schools. But if you have any academic career
goals (research/teach), then you may want to consider the reputation of the
school. ASDOH is almost a brand new so I do not know much about it, but all
other 4, especially the first 2, are reputable schools.
2. For a Chinese immigrant, do you think it would benefit a lot to walk an
extra miles to be a dental specialist? I am asking because I thought many
Chinese would just go to a Chinese dentist for all procedures.
Answer: It depends. If your targeted practice area is a Chinese community,
then specialization may not be a good idea. You need to face the fact that
many of our compatriots living in a China town type of setting may not be
willing to pay for the higher fee of a specialist. A general dentist can do
most of the procedures that a specialist do (except orthodontics), but
usually cheaper. If you want to avoid the Chinese community, then
specialization is not a bad idea. It also depends on what specialty. Ortho,
perio or OS does well.
3. I’m planning to borrow 300K+ for the 4 year tuition and living expenses
(6.8%+ interest). Or I may join US army to got the tuition covered while
serve for 4 years afterwards. Do you think it worth it? What’s the earning
potential for a Chinese dentist practicing here?
Answer: Many dental school graduates will have a $300k debt. But do not
worry about it, you can pay it off in a few short years. I am not sure if I
can put up a reliable estimate on the earning potential of Chinese dentists,
but here it is what I know: a practice in a medium sized east-coast city,
non-Chinese community, one dentist solo practice, 3.5 days a week, net
income $250k. A perio practice in a large metro area in the west-coast, non-
Chinese community, one owner dentist and two associate dentists (one of whom
is a part timer), 6 days a week, net income $1.3 million.
As for joining the military, it has its advantage and disadvantages. It is
not something I will ever consider. But after you work for the military for
20 years (you might get to deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan a few of those
years), you can retire and get a full pension and start a second career,
with two incomes.
4. For a practicing dentist, do you think Chinese have a higher or lower
income than the Caucasian counterpart?
Answer: Chinese dentists working in a Chinese community probably need to
work much harder to earn a comparable income with other dentists. This is
because the cut-throat competition in many Chinese communities I know. Many
Chinese dentists will accept any insurance fees and even forgo co-pays to
attract clients who are less willing to pay for service based on quality. | f****b 发帖数: 2410 | 7 very rich information. thank you for sharing. keep posting.
