First:
You have to read the website for that residency program and you can get it
either
From Freida http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/
Or from your AAMC web page.
Then what you have to look for!!! the current residents (any IMG) and where
did they went after residency (some do not write this in their websites) and
if they have fellowships read the names of the current fellows in the filed
you are interested in..
That can give an idea how friendly they are to the IMG.
Also read about the vision and the mission of the program (philosophy) the
curriculum
(how many months for the electives, to know if they have night float or not
) the awards the hospital got (e.g.: among top 100 hospital), the catchments
’ area (e.g.: we serve the south and east of west Virginia.. ,the call
schedule(q4 or q5),memorize things that are unique to the program in order
to say it when they ask you why did you choose our program, and also to open
a question about that issue(e.g:1 mo rotation in rural area, or the
residents are so friendly, strong division or faculties)
NB: you can know if they have a night float from the Freida site and I will
talk about it later.
Second:Open the Freida page for the program: http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/
You can know the names of the program director and the coordinator (you can
depend on that address to send to them the holiday season card), read the
comments,
You can know how many categorical positions from the residents’ number in
the second year (extra number in the first year for the prelim positions),
the type of the program (University, community or Community University
affiliated)
Under work schedule:
You can know if they have night float (if they said the Residents do not
participate during first year..that means they have two seniors cover the
night float and the interns do overnight calls).
Even if the program allow you to do moonlighting (make good money) but some
states require you finish the whole three years to got your license to do
that moonlighting so mostly it is for Americans.
Read the call schedule and the average hours scheduled for lectures
Under educational benefits:
Off-campus electives( which means the opportunity to do elective outside
your hospital or research in a strong university if your program is weak in
that field)(although NY hospitals if they have this opportunity they allow
you to do that within the NY state otherwise you will not be covered for
malpractice),
Formal mentoring (which means you have a faculty who always sits for a while
to give advice for improving yourself..most program have this ..the other
thing that some program allow you to change your mentor if you want so)
Research: optional or required.
Under resident evaluation:In-service exam: all the programs do that.
360 degree: every one worked with you will write an evaluations about you at
the end of the rotation..it is an electronic thing..you will know the name
of the faculty who wrote evaluation about you but you will not know who is
that resident who made that bad evaluation about you!!
OSCE: like the CS, it is expensive and only once in the second year where
they ask you to approach a case in a suitable why(e.g: breaking bad news
like Breast CA to a patient)and they tape that for you and give you a copy
to see how stupid you where.
Under employment benefits:
PDA, free parking…then salaries, vacation weeks (4 weeks is the best)..
Third:
How you can know what was the board pass rate for a specific program(which
give an idea how hardworking the residents are and also the educational
level for that program)
For Internal Medicine visit ABIM.org http://www.abim.org/resources/states/st_tn.shtm
Then just change the state.
For Pediatrics visit ABP.org https://www.abp.org/ABPWebSite/
Fourth:
You can know how many prematchs the program gave the last year and also this
year but after Feb when they update the site before the rank list.
Visit the NRMP: https://services.nrmp.org/R3/Home/Login/Login.cfm
Then log in your username then choose directory then choose the residency (
internal medicine) and categorical then the state then you screw the mouse
down and you will see
The quota number which is the number that program entered for the match (e.g
.: if the program has 25 positions on Frieda and his quota number was 10 so
that means the program gave 15 prematchs).

谢谢分享。
按原文给的连接不能连到freida,转到 AMA 主页去了。
找了一下,这个连接是freida online search 的页面。试着找了一下PROGRAM, 很好
用,呵呵。 Enjoy.
