Except Medicine-Preliminary, Surgery-Preliminary, Transitional, other “PGY-
1 Positions Unfilled” on the list are Categorical positions (start at 1st
year of residency).

Hi,Eric:
I don't understand why the Surgery-Preliminary (PGY-1 Only) has so many
unfilled spots this year (444) ? Does it always end up like this?
Thanks in advance.

Eric, Could you please define "Regional"?

Yes. Many AMGs try to avoid Surgery-Preliminary because the surgical intern-
year is tougher than Transitional and Preliminary Medicine. Some Surgery-
Preliminary programs purposely left those positions unfilled so people
matched to an advanced program can scramble for a Surgery-Preliminary spot.

The NRMP figures include "Regional" distribution (e.g., East, West, South
and Midwest). I removed the word "Regional" from the post now to avoid any
confusion. These are total number of positions available for scramble.
Thanks.

Eric: I received an email from a prelim surg program previously, saying
their position would be filled up by scramble on Mar 15. Can I send an email
now or Can I send an email tomorrow but before noon? How risk if I send an

I'd suggest avoiding any match violation, unless you know the PD/PC
personally. Get everything ready now.

hi, Eric,
thank you so much for the information! I have a few questions for you:
1. I was withdrawn from the MATCH because the delay in taking my CK exam,
and my score is still pending (hopefully will come out on March 16). Do you
think my chance will be very little? I will just give it a try anyway.
2. Should we contact the program only after noon tomorrow?
3. what is the difference between Medicine-Neurology and Neurology? Is Medicine-Neurology a combination of both and will take a few more years to finish the residency?
4. Can we download the list by each states and specialties? I will ask a few
of my friends to help me out, and will ask each of the person to download
the list of the Unfilled Positions of different specialty, do you think it
is a good plan? any suggestions about the group work?

I never scrambled before so someone else with more experience may give you a
better answer. I just provide some personal opinions (could be wrong).
1.I was withdrawn from the MATCH because the delay in taking my CK exam,
and my score is still pending (hopefully will come out on March 16). Do you
think my chance will be very little? I will just give it a try anyway.
A; According to ECFMG, “if you wish to participate in the Scramble only,
you must obtain an ERAS Token; register at MyERAS; register with NRMP; and
apply to at least one program. We strongly urge you to apply to a program at
least two weeks prior to the Scramble.” Without this, you can't
participate in the Scramble.
For FMGs without USMLE Step 2 CK the chance is small. Since you already took
CK so you may give it a shot.
2.Should we contact the program only after noon tomorrow?
A: Again, according to ECFMG, "regardless of whether you have registered
with NRMP, you should not contact any programs before noon on Tuesday, March
15, 2011. It is important that you understand the terms and conditions of
the Match Agreement; therefore, please read the agreement found on the NRMP
website. Programs will take note of all applicants who violate this Match
rule and may report them to NRMP. Programs as well as applicants are bound
by the Match Agreement.”
If you did some interviews before you may send an email today to PC and PD
to tell them you are still very interested in their program and give them
your contact information. Sounds like you didn't participate in any
interviews.
3.what is the difference between Medicine-Neurology and Neurology? Is
Medicine-Neurology a combination of both and will take a few more years to
finish the residency?
A: Those are Medicine-Neurology combined programs and they may take about 5
years, compare to 4 years in Neurology.
4.Can we download the list by each states and specialties? I will ask a few
of my friends to help me out, and will ask each of the person to download
the list of the Unfilled Positions of different specialty, do you think it
is a good plan? any suggestions about the group work?
If you have registered with NRMP and applied to at least one program, you
will be able to see the unfilled program list. In the past a group of
friends tried to call many places and faxed application materials to many
programs. Now many programs only accept applications through ERAS. So
basically,
- Submit your application through ERAS;
- Contact programs if you have some connections;
- Visit nearby programs;
- Contact other programs if you're lucky to get a live person on another end.
Keep these in mind (from ECFMG):
The Scramble starts on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Time
in the United States, when the list of programs with unfilled positions is
posted on the NRMP website, and ends on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 12:00
noon, Eastern Time in the United States. Once the list has been posted, you
may apply to any program with an unfilled position. You will not have access
to the list of unfilled programs if you did not register with the Match;
refer to the NRMP website for its policies. The Match Agreement prohibits
applicants from sharing NRMP' List of Unfilled Programs with individuals who
did not register with the Match.
During the Scramble, you can use ERAS to apply to a maximum of 45 programs
at no cost. This includes programs to which you had applied previously
during the regular ERAS application season that appear on the list of
unfilled positions. Effective for the 2011 Scramble, there will be a limit
on the number of applications you can submit on a given day. You will not be
able to carry over any unused applications to the next day. The limits for
submitting applications using ERAS for the 2011 Scramble are:
Tuesday, March 15 (12:00 p.m. - 11:59 p.m.) – you may apply or reapply to a
total of 30 programs
Wednesday, March 16 (12:00 a.m. - 11:59 p.m.) – you may apply or reapply to
a total of 10 programs
Thursday, March 17 (12:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) – you may apply or reapply to
a total of 5 programs
All times listed are Eastern Time in the United States.
You will be able to apply to any combination of new programs and programs to
which you applied previously during the regular ERAS application season,
provided you do not exceed the daily application limits listed above.
If you reapply to programs, you cannot retransmit or make any changes to
your application; if you need to make changes to document assignments, you
must do so before reapplying.

I greatly appreciate your reply which is very helpful!
I did a few interviews before but did not contact the PCs and PDs yet since
I though it would be a violation to the rules. I will contact them now.
Thanks again!
