Hematology & Oncology
Cancer is the leading cause of mortality for people younger than 85 years
old. After decades of vigorous study, new modalities of cancer treatment
are emerging. Advance in research has brought new hope in fundamental
changes in cancer treatment. To share these exciting progresses in cancer
biology, physicians and scientists from the BMS Hematology and Oncology
Session will update audience on the latest progresses and novel strategies
of intervention and cutting edge discoveries in cancer research. Among
internationally distinguished experts in the fields, are Professors Xi He,

Cardiovascular birth defects"; Dali Fan, MD, PhD, UC Davis, on “sudden
cardiac death”.
Regenerative Medicine
The regenerative medicine session presents a series of cross-discipline and
translational topics that will appeal to a broad audience of both basic
scientists and clinicians. The session aims to highlight the most recent
preclinical advances in gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and mechanism-based
small molecule approaches to regenerate tissue and cure diseases. The
speakers include field leaders and renowned scientists, Drs. Ting Xie,
Jisong Li, Steve Tseng, Jian Feng, Louis Chang, and Jianlong Wang, who will
introduce recent breakthroughs from their own labs and deliberate
significant contributions made by others in the respective topics during our
panel discussions.
Infectious Diseases
Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses,
parasites or fungi. In Asian population, pneumonia and hepatitis are most
common infectious diseases. In this section, our top scientists and
physicians will explore the causes, novel treatments, and prevention of
infectious diseases. The updated vaccination schedule will be introduced.
Which vaccines do your children need before they go to school? What is HPV
vaccine? You can get answers in our section. In addition, you can bring your
questions to the experts directly.
Neurology and Neurobiology
The neuroscience session will present cutting-edge neuroscience talks from
worldwi-leading scientists and physicians including Dr. Qiufu Ma from Dana-
Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. Zhongcong Xie from Massachusetts General
Hospital, Drs. Xin Wang and Xiang Gao from Brigham and Women’s Hospital,
and Dr. Lan Qin from University of Massachusetts. The topics will range from
translational drug discoveries and clinical management and prevention for
neurological diseases, the coding of pain versus itch, to anesthesia
neurotoxicity in developing brain. Accomplishing our goal to bridge the
basic science and clinical investigation will offer hope to patients
suffering from a variety of neurological diseases.
Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases
Endocrine diseases, with the example of diabetes, have imposed a huge tax on
our society and will be worse in the next decades. With a prevalence of 10%
of population with diabetes soon, both health professionals and regular
population cannot ignore this issue. At least 1/3 of hospitalized patients
have diabetes, which means, no matter which specialty you are in, you have
to deal with diabetes. Osteoporosis is much more common in older women then
people think, it causes severe damage to life quality at late age. Please
join us at the Bridge conference with excellent speakers from New England to
explore measures to battle these common problems.
Psychiatric Diseases
Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the US. However,
Asian Americans have the lowest rates of utilization of mental health
services among all ethnic populations. This underrepresentation is
attributable to stigma over using services, conceptions of health and
treatment that differ from those underlying Western medicine, cultural
inappropriateness of services, and the use of alternative resources within
the Asian American communities. The mental health session is provided by a
panel of clinician-researchers who are experts in various mental disorders.
Important topics to be covered during the session include: late life
depression and dementia by Dr. Wendy Qiu from Boston University; diagnosis
and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder by Dr. Georgina
Garcia from Children’s Hospital Boston; anxiety disorder and comorbid
medical conditions by Dr. Liang Yuan from Tufts Medical School;
schizophrenia and comorbid metabolic syndrome by Dr. Xiaoduo Fan from
Massachusetts General Hospital.
Inflammation and Immunity
Broadly speaking, aberrant immune reaction and inflammation are the leading
causes of morbidity and mortality. In addition to its critical role in
cancer surveillance and pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, alteration
of host self-defense system underlies common symptoms, such as fever, skin
rash, joint pain, diarrhea and bloody bowel movement. Joined by world
leading experts in this field, the BMS Immunity and Inflammation session
will focus on these common clinical issues, their underlying mechanisms and
current and future management strategies. Among the distinguished speakers
are: Dr. John Kao from University of Michigan, Drs. Vijay Yajnik and Dicken
Ko from Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Jerry Zhu from Brigham and Women
’s Hospital and Dr. Tony Ip from University of Massachusetts.
Education and Career in Medicine
This educational and mentoring session will be graced by a panel of experts
covering nearly every aspect of a medical career. As a special guest speaker
for the session, Dr. Tom LaMont, Associate Editor of New England Journal of
Medicine and Chief Editor of UpToDate will give a plenary lecture on career
development in medicine. This will be followed by Dr. Julianne Ip,
Associate Dean of Brown Medical School, who will speak on career advancement
in medical school and residency training. The mentoring effort will be
further enhanced by a talk on how to be successful in academic medicine by
Dr. John Kao, Associate Director of GI training program at University of
Michigan.
Development
The “Development” session explores not only the development from bench-
side research to bed-side therapy, but also that from brilliant ideas to
viable businesses. Moreover, we try to shed some light, and open the
discussion, on the continuous development of the professionals in medicine
and life sciences. In order to build bridges between “academia and
industry”, “basic research and drug development”, “novel ideas and
successful ventures”, “biotechnology and supporting fields such as
Investment and Legal”, we have the honor to have recruited a stellar panel
of speakers---including outstanding physicians who have traversed the fields
of medicine and business, founders with life science background who have
built successful businesses ranked among the “Inc. 500”, CEO’s and
executives from biotech and pharma, as well as experts from the venture
capital and legal communities.

最近进展;波士顿儿童医院的Dr. Georgina Garcia 主讲 “多动症的诊断和治疗”;
