Specialty- require more communication skills. Increasing requirements.
Package preparation:
US clinical experience - psychiatry OB or externship. B/c it is very special
, stigma towards it, with special respect, affect PS writing and IV. If you
have other experience (i.e IM / neurology), don’t hesitate to put it on.
Learn about psychiatry basic concept - first aid, wiki.
Step 3 pass - big plus. (some program require to pass before PGY2)
High proportion of university base - more interested in person with research
background. / combine with clinic field
According to speaker’s own experience, suggest to contact with PD ahead of
time to get more chance of IV.
Email: PD name + organization search, suggest not to call (otherwise phone
interview)
Short email, with 30sec. Specific to each PD, dear PD, candidate, infor,
score, recommendation letter, OB/externship.
PS. Write your own. Practice IV. Think of a good story, introduce how you
get interested.
IV. If you are on the waiting list, ask PD/PC at around Dec. See if you are
a team player, how is your personality. Not much chances for courtesy IV.
IV: pay attention to details. Be cautious to the dinner before IV. Not much
questions about clinical knowledge. Be prepared for a clinical case. Ask
behavior questions (maybe not a good program).
Why psychiatry + why here (why do you like this city/program)
IV with other people (social worker, psychologist). They may not even know
whether they are interviewing patient or applicant.
Common topic (sports, news): pay more attention to communication skills.
Show empathy (very important character).

Very critical problem. At least no problem to listen to radio (commercial).
Accent is not the biggest issue, as long as not affect communication.,
sometime is culture based.
About email sending to PD, can you use FREDA email address? What else do we
need to include?
Yes, as long as the email is addressed to PD.
Do not include CV /PS, just add your shining points (research, score...),
put AAMC ID
Stigma about psychiatrist
Make a clear stand, it’s true it exists.
Same symptom patients, pt with psychiatric Hx has delayed treatment in ER.
More things to do, improve the care for psych- patients. Show your passion.

Courtesy IV: give you IV, may not look at your package carefully.

ask LOR. Depends on your altitude. No bias on inpatient / outpatient.

人. Courtesy IV不是standard IV,可能不会特别看重你.

口音:不是大问题,关键是不影响交流就好

文化:slang, eg. bipolar的病人说流行音乐可能交流有影响;但是现在作为申请住院医
