发帖数: 618 | 1 To Aplusplus: The behavior of NewBie is getting ridiculous, and is going to
ruin this board, so I want to file a serious complaint about her.
Even though we disagree often, I sincerely respect you, as well as Lexian,
sjslip and others on this board. I enjoyed the posts and discussions from
all of you, except NewBie. I’d make it no secret that she is the only ID I
dislike, both in this board and MedicalCareer.
NewBie is notorious for her behavior to chase behind others’ posts and
correct grammar, and despite of criticism from all others, she has not
changed her behavior in any way. Her behavior today is extremely ridiculous
for two reasons.
First, focusing so much on grammar is absolutely not the way to master
English, and I believe you know this well too. Spelling and grammar are very
easily corrected by computer nowadays. From my observation of many Chinese
students and CMGs, as well as myself, their main problem with English is
never grammar, but usually the lack of proper words and sentence structure.
Second, and what irks me most, criticizing English grammar out of a
paragraph written mainly in Chinese is ridiculous. How can you apply English
grammar to Chinese? Of course I’m not going to pay any attention to
English when I write in Chinese, but just substitute a few words with
English simply because there is no appropriate translation.
Honestly, I was at a stage where NewBie is now, and that’s why I believe
her behavior is detrimental to all of us. I used to worry so much about
grammar that I can hardly write a sentence for my first scientific paper. My
boss, a 60-year-old Jewish man, offered to write it for me but with me
sitting next to him and telling him what to write. We went sentence by
sentence; I said a sentence and then he reinterpreted and typed it down. I
immediately found typos and grammar mistakes, and pointed out them loudly.
He got so annoyed and yelled to me “let us finish first!” many times, and
at one time asked me “are you American or I am?” Looking back, I must
thank him for correcting my bad behavior. After I got rid of the bad habit,
I can focus much more on the logical flow of a paragraph, and I write much
better nowadays.
Most of us were trained in grammar and spelling for many years in China, and
the TOEFL test focuses a lot on those issues. That’s why we Chinese tend
to worry about grammar, yet the ridiculous phenomenon is, the more we worry
about it, the poorer our performance is. The intrinsic reason is that when
you worry, you are trying to recall the rigid, lifeless grammar rules. Just
like you learn medicine much better from live patients than from textbooks,
you learn English much better from imitating and repeating what native
speakers say, than from reciting grammar rules. Grammar rules are like the
line rules in First Aid step1/step2 books; they help you at the beginning
and help you ace the exams, but they will harm you if you stick with them
too much in real life. Have you seen any physician play “step1/step2 police
” around? Hell no! Just imitate the native speakers as religiously as your
attendings.
And if NewBie had paid enough attention to American slang, she would know
that her grammar rules are made to be broken. My favorite examples of this
include “she don’t care” and “I don’t know nothing”. I’m not saying
that we Chinese need to speak with such non-orthodox slangs. I’m just
saying that it is wrong to summarize some universal grammar rules and take
them as gold standard. You want a gold standard test? Easy, just google your
phrase in question. Anyone can proofread his own work in this way; anyone
can improve his grammar if he is determined to do so. We don’t need a
Chinese-style English grammar teacher looming around here.
For these reasons, I cannot see anything good out of NewBie’s behavior here
. I step up to openly chastise her now, only because I like this board and
would like to see it flourish. I hate to see the moot points about English
grammar overcoming the main theme of medical practice. It is very
disappointing to see the “Grammar police” post got marked.
I’m not asking Aplusplus to ban NewBie to the extent skyscorpio did. I’m
just asking her to give up her grammar police behavior. That behavior
destroys the writing confidence and misdirects the theme of discussion here.
I do welcome her own posts and discussion written in English, if they are
related to medical practice. If they are interesting, I will reply and
discuss in English too. In fact, I’d love to write in English here, because
I can type twice faster than in Chinese (I have only the very inefficient
pinyin method to input Chinese). In general, I reply in Chinese to posts
written in Chinese, and reply in English to posts in English. I believe it
is a disrespect of the Chinese language and its speaker if you can speak
Chinese but choose to respond in English. Same disrespect vice versa; that’
s the reason I wrote this complaint in English.

2. So you know, I have not interrupted anyone as you did. How can I do any of the hand waving during the course of anyone's writing done in private?
3. My intention has always been good. Just because nobody said anything, it does not mean it is not embarrassing to write some really lousy English in public. It is better to learn and improve instead of stepping on the same spot and repeat the same grammatical errors over and over again.
4. Can we all get along? Dont hold grudge against me. It was just one time I pointed fingers at your career killing remarks.
5. I will ruin this board? A tad exaggeration on your part.

that is, sharing my experience.
To NewBie:
1, your PA threshold is ridiculously low. Last time I LOL and you said it is
PA; now A++ lol here all the time. Come on.
2, google "a good advice" and learn how common it is among native speakers.
Your darn old grammar rules are junk.
3, I can't remember that I made any career-killing remark, nor do I remember
you pointing out it. My grudge is held at your grammar-correction behavior
only.
4, Let me put it this way: grammar correction is cheap work that even a
computer can do. The skills to write a coherent essay include paragraph and
sentence organization, transition words, theme highlighting, etc. You haven'
t shown us any of these skills. And you think my essay is long?? It is just
the length of an average physician's admission note. If you intend to
improve our English, you can start with my essay here and correct ANYTHING
you want other than spelling and grammar. I wrote it without editing so I'm
sure there's room of improvement. Show us your true command of English
please.

Well, this is a bit tricky because it's not just a language question,
you're also asking how the situation should be interpreted (which is
difficult to do if you weren't present) and how to respond in a
difficult situation (which can be awkward even in your native language).
Option 1) I would think the old gentleman rather strange if this was
what he was doing, but who knows? In any case, I wouldn't reply "oops,
you got me", as you probably don't really want to say to him "I think
you just tried to trap me in an awkward situation", even if that was in
fact what he was indeed trying to do. It also may sound as though you
were just pretending to like the advisor, whereas in fact you are now
acknowledging that he is unlikeable.
Option 2) Possible, but it sounds a bit strange. You're more likely to
say "I'm sorry to hear that" if you hear that someone has died, or some
other unfortunate event has occurred.
Option 3) ‘I guess he must have changed.' --Probably the best of your
suggestions, in my opinion - you are sticking by your original opinion
of the advisor, whilst acknowledging that the old man might have had a
different experience. It is a good, diplomatic response.

Let me put it in another fashion you can understand. Say you have scored 266 for your CK. But why laugh at someone who got 240 and is willing to help others. Now, you can see how ridiculous you are, can you?

高兴的时候我觉得学到了东西。
不高兴的时候就ignore她，或者跟着challenge她的英语。
我一般不爱看她的英文帖子。一堆平时工作场合我都很少碰到的用词用语
不过这人爱攻击中国MD这个群体，就显得人品不好了。
不要人身攻击是网上论坛的一个管理基本原则。
本版这点做得好：只要不人身攻击，什么观点都欢迎。感觉考版的版主太累了，天天善
后。 |

以前在考版我都直接ignore她。她倒是把我盯上了。
不过她把人分成三六九等的，我就知道最好的办法就是ignore；高兴的时候也顺手回个

先说明一下，这个决定其实在3月25日我们版务跟mitbbs站务沟通以后就实施了，但是
没有发公告，最近不断有人询问为什么我们又封NB。我觉得有必要公开说明一下。
NB的这个处理结果不是一两个帖子的问题，而是过去一年多它在麦地的所做所为导致的
。它的主要问题有：
1）不懂尊重别人，随心所欲地跟贴嘲弄别人的英文，严重影响版上正常交流。
2）在版上不断发表攻击他人的言论，严重干扰版面次序。
3）最严重的是，无数次随意发站内信箱去恶意攻击他人，数十名ID遭受过该人的短信
人身攻击！〉20名麦地的老ID因为不堪其骚扰而离开这里，给麦地造成不可估量的损失。
4) 干扰和辱骂版务。我想特别强调的一点是我们版务用短信跟它至少沟通过50次，苦
口婆心，但是它仍然我行我素，不知悔改。从我们新上任两周之内，我们版务至少收到
这个人〉100封短信，大部分是辱骂和人身攻击，其余的是教导和指挥我们如何做版务
，以充分保障它的人权。
DrNewbie 这些恶行是蓄意所为，断无可恕之理。为了严肃版纪版规，更为了维护中华
民族良好的道德风尚，我们版务经过与站方沟通，痛下决心，决定在麦地里
全面封杀DrNewbie及其马甲。站方也已经备案同意。希望这个决定能得到大家的理
解和支持。共同维护麦地良好的交流次序！

白人都看不懂也听不懂的。每次我的同事写email给大家，不是没谓语就是没宾语。所

2. The only crime of mine is USMedEdu declared me as the public enemy. He
is a bully in medi. He has used over the top nasty words against me and

Kaye as the worst BZ in medi and no one dared to thank her for her 1 yr of
hard work. Because my fight over the peace in medi, USMedEdu's nasty posts
have been deleted 24/7 in medi and many world class doctors have been back

3. I have reported so many very abusive PMs to me. You can check your
record. I have communicated with the BZs over unfair treatment to me, which
I believe is my right and their responsibilities as BZs to hear from me. I
have NOT repeated PM attacks on anyone. If one or two slipped out, it is
all for technical diffic
s. They could have blocked my PM. I dont see where the harassment issue
comes from. Many IDs left because the bully Dok asked them to. The fights
erupted because Dok has trained a bunch of intolerant thugs who cant debate

前辈可以看看，step123 是它的一个马甲。这个马甲刚出现的时候我们并没有说破，也

It was early this year when I was banned by the scorpion after I fought back the bully for his nasty posts on me. 我同意你的观点，语感，遣词和练习比语法重要的多。
练习口音方面，可以去看看文学城的美语世界版，那里有很多人贴自己朗读英语的录音
，互相指出口音上的缺陷。很多时候自己讲话感觉不到问题，哪怕听自己的录音也没有
感觉，但是听别人说话，不顺耳的地方会很敏感。我有朋友在那个版混了几个月，感到
口音方面进步很大。
说到底英文只是锦上添花的东西，牛人关键是牛在看待问题的角度和深度。

首先，当然是内容最重要。这个大家都是有共识的。
其次，用词和语法也重要。
专业文章嘛，有些个别用词不当，上下文一猜也明白了，可是每次见到那个用得不当的
词汇我就心里咯噔一下。
语法也是。文章么，就算有语法错误，比如dangling modifiers呀，主动被动式呀，可
数不可数名词呀，上下文一猜，也明白了。
不过看完这类文章就是心里不舒服。
我后来想起一个比喻：
内容好比一个人，活蹦乱跳能跑百米的。百米成绩越好，这文章内容越好。
用词和语法就好比这个人五官长歪了，而且有眼屎有鼻涕有口臭，虽然能看能闻能说，
就是面目可憎。
另外，google能搜索到的词组，绝对不代表正确。其中有不少人是在错误使用。你从
google上也统计不出错误使用的人的比例是多少。更何况，就算这个比例超过50%，也
不能说学术界就采纳错误用法了。
例子可见中文的：万人空巷，明日黄花。很多人都用错了。
在生活中，如果别人常打断话纠正语法错误，这个的确非常讨人厌，因为打断了正常交
流。
网上不一样呀。纠正语法的帖子，跟在后边，可看可不看。
这也是为什么网上的交际法则会和实际生活中的交际法则会有些区别的。
比如平日谁显摆呀，周围很多人很反感的。可是网上显摆的那么多，大家也都不以为逆。 |

ruin this board, so I want to file a serious complaint about her.
Even though we disagree often, I sincerely respect you, as well as Lexian,
sjslip and others on this board. I enjoyed the posts and discussions from
all of you, except NewBie. I’d make it no secret that she is the only ID I
dislike, both in this board and MedicalCareer.
NewBie is notorious for her behavior to chase behind others’ posts and
correct grammar, and despite of criticism from all others, she has not
changed her behavior in any way. Her behavior today is extremely ridiculous
for two reasons.
First, focusing so much on grammar is absolutely not the way to master
English, and I believe you know this well too. Spelling and grammar are very
easily corrected by computer nowadays. From my observation of many Chinese
students and CMGs, as well as myself, their main problem with English is
never grammar, but usually the lack of proper words and sentence structure.
Second, and what irks me most, criticizing English grammar out of a
paragraph written mainly in Chinese is ridiculous. How can you apply English
grammar to Chinese? Of course I’m not going to pay any attention to
English when I write in Chinese, but just substitute a few words with
English simply because there is no appropriate translation.
Honestly, I was at a stage where NewBie is now, and that’s why I believe
her behavior is detrimental to all of us. I used to worry so much about
grammar that I can hardly write a sentence for my first scientific paper. My
boss, a 60-year-old Jewish man, offered to write it for me but with me
sitting next to him and telling him what to write. We went sentence by
sentence; I said a sentence and then he reinterpreted and typed it down. I
immediately found typos and grammar mistakes, and pointed out them loudly.
He got so annoyed and yelled to me “let us finish first!” many times, and
at one time asked me “are you American or I am?” Looking back, I must
thank him for correcting my bad behavior. After I got rid of the bad habit,
I can focus much more on the logical flow of a paragraph, and I write much
better nowadays.
Most of us were trained in grammar and spelling for many years in China, and
the TOEFL test focuses a lot on those issues. That’s why we Chinese tend
to worry about grammar, yet the ridiculous phenomenon is, the more we worry
about it, the poorer our performance is. The intrinsic reason is that when
you worry, you are trying to recall the rigid, lifeless grammar rules. Just
like you learn medicine much better from live patients than from textbooks,
you learn English much better from imitating and repeating what native
speakers say, than from reciting grammar rules. Grammar rules are like the
line rules in First Aid step1/step2 books; they help you at the beginning
and help you ace the exams, but they will harm you if you stick with them
too much in real life. Have you seen any physician play “step1/step2 police
” around? Hell no! Just imitate the native speakers as religiously as your
attendings.
And if NewBie had paid enough attention to American slang, she would know
that her grammar rules are made to be broken. My favorite examples of this
include “she don’t care” and “I don’t know nothing”. I’m not saying
that we Chinese need to speak with such non-orthodox slangs. I’m just
saying that it is wrong to summarize some universal grammar rules and take
them as gold standard. You want a gold standard test? Easy, just google your
phrase in question. Anyone can proofread his own work in this way; anyone
can improve his grammar if he is determined to do so. We don’t need a
Chinese-style English grammar teacher looming around here.
For these reasons, I cannot see anything good out of NewBie’s behavior here
. I step up to openly chastise her now, only because I like this board and
would like to see it flourish. I hate to see the moot points about English
grammar overcoming the main theme of medical practice. It is very
disappointing to see the “Grammar police” post got marked.
I’m not asking Aplusplus to ban NewBie to the extent skyscorpio did. I’m
just asking her to give up her grammar police behavior. That behavior
destroys the writing confidence and misdirects the theme of discussion here.
I do welcome her own posts and discussion written in English, if they are
related to medical practice. If they are interesting, I will reply and
discuss in English too. In fact, I’d love to write in English here, because
I can type twice faster than in Chinese (I have only the very inefficient
pinyin method to input Chinese). In general, I reply in Chinese to posts
written in Chinese, and reply in English to posts in English. I believe it
is a disrespect of the Chinese language and its speaker if you can speak
Chinese but choose to respond in English. Same disrespect vice versa; that’
s the reason I wrote this complaint in English.

3, I can't remember that I made any career-killing remark, nor do I remember

only.
4, Let me put it this way: grammar correction is cheap work that even a
computer can do. The skills to write a coherent essay include paragraph and
sentence organization, transition words, theme highlighting, etc. You haven'
t shown us any of these skills. And you think my essay is long?? It is just
the length of an average physician's admission note. If you intend to
improve our English, you can start with my essay here and correct ANYTHING
you want other than spelling and grammar. I wrote it without editing so I'm
sure there's room of improvement. Show us your true command of English

Well, this is a bit tricky because it's not just a language question,
you're also asking how the situation should be interpreted (which is
difficult to do if you weren't present) and how to respond in a
difficult situation (which can be awkward even in your native language).
Option 1) I would think the old gentleman rather strange if this was
what he was doing, but who knows? In any case, I wouldn't reply "oops,
you got me", as you probably don't really want to say to him "I think
you just tried to trap me in an awkward situation", even if that was in
fact what he was indeed trying to do. It also may sound as though you
were just pretending to like the advisor, whereas in fact you are now
acknowledging that he is unlikeable.
Option 2) Possible, but it sounds a bit strange. You're more likely to
say "I'm sorry to hear that" if you hear that someone has died, or some
other unfortunate event has occurred.
Option 3) ‘I guess he must have changed.' --Probably the best of your
suggestions, in my opinion - you are sticking by your original opinion
of the advisor, whilst acknowledging that the old man might have had a
different experience. It is a good, diplomatic response.

高兴的时候我觉得学到了东西。
不高兴的时候就ignore她，或者跟着challenge她的英语。
我一般不爱看她的英文帖子。一堆平时工作场合我都很少碰到的用词用语
不过这人爱攻击中国MD这个群体，就显得人品不好了。
不要人身攻击是网上论坛的一个管理基本原则。

1）不懂尊重别人，随心所欲地跟贴嘲弄别人的英文，严重影响版上正常交流。
2）在版上不断发表攻击他人的言论，严重干扰版面次序。
3）最严重的是，无数次随意发站内信箱去恶意攻击他人，数十名ID遭受过该人的短信
人身攻击！〉20名麦地的老ID因为不堪其骚扰而离开这里，给麦地造成不可估量的损失。
4) 干扰和辱骂版务。我想特别强调的一点是我们版务用短信跟它至少沟通过50次，苦
口婆心，但是它仍然我行我素，不知悔改。从我们新上任两周之内，我们版务至少收到
这个人〉100封短信，大部分是辱骂和人身攻击，其余的是教导和指挥我们如何做版务
，以充分保障它的人权。
DrNewbie 这些恶行是蓄意所为，断无可恕之理。为了严肃版纪版规，更为了维护中华
民族良好的道德风尚，我们版务经过与站方沟通，痛下决心，决定在麦地里
全面封杀DrNewbie及其马甲。站方也已经备案同意。希望这个决定能得到大家的理
解和支持。共同维护麦地良好的交流次序！

record. I have communicated with the BZs over unfair treatment to me, which
I believe is my right and their responsibilities as BZs to hear from me. I

前辈可以看看，step123 是它的一个马甲。这个马甲刚出现的时候我们并没有说破，也

It was early this year when I was banned by the scorpion after I fought back the bully for his nasty posts on me. And for your information, I will take the credit for being the one who nailed the coffin on the bully and he is gone for good. Lexian, A++, and ChiUSMD, viky, fox, civili, r01, and many others did their parts, but the clincher was from a post of mine. 练习口音方面，可以去看看文学城的美语世界版，那里有很多人贴自己朗读英语的录音

首先，当然是内容最重要。这个大家都是有共识的。
其次，用词和语法也重要。
专业文章嘛，有些个别用词不当，上下文一猜也明白了，可是每次见到那个用得不当的
词汇我就心里咯噔一下。
语法也是。文章么，就算有语法错误，比如dangling modifiers呀，主动被动式呀，可
数不可数名词呀，上下文一猜，也明白了。
不过看完这类文章就是心里不舒服。
我后来想起一个比喻：
内容好比一个人，活蹦乱跳能跑百米的。百米成绩越好，这文章内容越好。
用词和语法就好比这个人五官长歪了，而且有眼屎有鼻涕有口臭，虽然能看能闻能说，
就是面目可憎。
另外，google能搜索到的词组，绝对不代表正确。其中有不少人是在错误使用。你从
google上也统计不出错误使用的人的比例是多少。更何况，就算这个比例超过50%，也
不能说学术界就采纳错误用法了。
例子可见中文的：万人空巷，明日黄花。很多人都用错了。
在生活中，如果别人常打断话纠正语法错误，这个的确非常讨人厌，因为打断了正常交
流。
网上不一样呀。纠正语法的帖子，跟在后边，可看可不看。
这也是为什么网上的交际法则会和实际生活中的交际法则会有些区别的。
比如平日谁显摆呀，周围很多人很反感的。可是网上显摆的那么多，大家也都不以为逆。 |
