the government limited the prices of some of those classic and effective
drugs to such low levels that they are below the cost (both manufacturing
and distribution). take mephalan as an example, it must be refrigerated
therefore the cost of transportation and distribution is high. GSK simply
cannot do it any more with such a pricing policy. Even now the price of
bootlegged mephalan from Hong Kong is still quite low (~ RMB 100 for a month
's supply). You can imagine how low the price was for GSK to supply
hospitals and drugstores in China.
mephalan is easy to manufacture. it doesn't have patent protection any more.
but the government-determined price is so low even drugmakers in China don'
t want to make it.
on the other hand, the government allows many other drugs to charge
exorbitant prices, depending on how well you bribe the officials.
