Pure Michigan Fall Color Update - October 11 - October 17, 2012
UPPER PENINSULA
Michigan’s annual fall color show is on the move. The Western Upper
Peninsula is now past peak with most of the bright colors of fall having
begun to fade. However, there’s yet enough color variation to make this
area still well worth the drive.
In the Eastern Upper Peninsula, most trees are in full color reporting 75-
100 percent change. Deep reds and bright yellows prevail with minimum green
foliage remaining. A few trees have yet to reach peak, but are showing vivid
colors. However, these area trees will peak very quickly.
The shoreline and inland scenic drives of the Keweenaw Peninsula continue to
show off a stunning brilliance of fall hues. The area is reporting 75-100
percent saturation with a full spectrum of color now on display–and is
expected to be around into next week.
Chippewa County’s fall foliage is in its full glory with 75-100 peak
conditions. Now is the perfect time to experience area’s amazing fall show
–but hurry, with colder temperatures and blustery days, it won’t last long.
LOWER PENINSULA
Michigan’s annual fall color show is moving south. More than 2/3 of the
Lower Peninsula is reporting peak conditions, with 75-100 percent color
saturation. Heading into the weekend, just a scattering of trees are still
waiting to peak.
Northwest Michigan
Red, yellow, gold, and orange hues dominate the landscape in the Grand
Traverse Bay, where color is filling in fast. The area is currently
displaying 75-100 percent peak conditions and this weekend may be the best
time to view prime fall color in this region. One of the best places to
enjoy the area’s fall color is the Old Mission Peninsula, which juts into
the center of Grand Traverse Bay, 22 miles long and in some places as little
as a mile wide.
Peak color has arrived in the Charlevoix County area, now at 75-100 percent
saturation. Great color can be seen driving along C-48 from Boyne Falls to
Atwood through the small towns along the way. Another great route is from
Boyne Falls along M-75 to Boyne City. Reds and oranges are particularly
vivid this year and leaf retention is reported to be very good.
Northeast
The Grayling area is past peak having lost much of its color with the rain
this past weekend. However, there are still pockets of mostly yellows and
oranges remaining. Hartwick Pines State Park area continues to be one of
those areas.
As much as half the vegetation in and around Alcona County has changed color
. The maples are red and orange, mingled with some variegated combinations
of chartreuse, yellow, and tangerine. Beech, aspen, and birch trees are
golden shades of topaz, saffron, and curry. The area’s oak trees are mostly
still deep green with a touch of russet, copper and auburn. With 50-75
percent peak, the area is still one or more weeks away from peak.
In Alpena, viewers will catch the best color around the shoreline with stops
at two historic lighthouses and the site of an old logging village. The
forests and hills near Hubbard Lake lead to miles of jewel-colored woodlands
and great views of the lake. Color development in the area is reported at
75-100 percent.
Central Michigan
The Grand Haven area is displaying 50-75 percent peak and is a blaze of
oranges, reds, and yellows. The area offers a number of colorful walking
tours, as well as some amazing bike routes. Popular routes include the 15-
mile lakeside trail–just across the US-31 drawbridge from downtown Grand
Haven–as well as the path along Historic River Road with great views of the
Grand River.
Southwest
The South Haven area is currently reporting patchy color variations;
although, some clearly defined changes can be seen. About three fourths of
the foliage is still in green; however, it is anticipated that peak
conditions are less than one week away.
About three fourths of the leaves in Lenawee County are still showing summer
foliage. However, leaf-peepers will see some distinct changes among the 25
-50 percent color saturation range. Area maples are displaying bright
oranges; the spiral pattern of local Virginia creepers are wrapping tree
trunks in a brilliant red to team-up with the area’s yellows, reds, oranges
which all make for a breathtaking sight against the still green foliage.
Peak is one to two weeks away.
The area comprising Wayne, Macomb and Washtenaw counties is still one to two
week away from peak, reporting 25-50 percent color change at this time.
