When I graduated from college some years back, I was gripped with the
unnerving sense that I, as an American, had little understanding of the
wider world. Accordingly, I spend the next four years living in Brazil,
Eastern Europe, Turkey, and finally China. The insight and local knowledge
gained in those years has proven invaluable, and while I am and always will
be a far cry from an expert, I feel compelled to weigh in, because there are

people in China may actually be worth listening to, even if they are views
you may not like to hear. This, in and of itself, is already rare coming
from a member of the Western press. Nevertheless, I disagree that the
situation in Tibet is in any way comparable to that of the U. S. and Iraq,
for reasons that many commenters have already outlined above. I will not
