in the context of warfare to refer to enemy soldiers. The oldest mention of
the term was in a slang dictionary published in 1893 which defined "gook" a
s "a low prostitute."[1] The first prominent use of the term as an ethnic sl
ur can be traced to the U.S. occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1920 when U.S.
Marines serving in Haiti used the term as a derogatory nickname for the Hai
tians.[2] The term continued to be used by American soldiers stationed aroun
d the world to refer to native populations considered to be darker skinned,
"non-Christian" or "oriental".[3]

ng "country."[7][8] The Korean word is pronounced [kuk] when used alone, but
[ɡuk] when used as an affix, for example in Hanguk, meaning "Korea". Accor
ding to one explanation, American soldiers during the Korean War were often
confronted by Korean soldiers and civilians and would hear them say, "
" [miɡuk] meaning "America." (For a derivation, see 美國.) The American s
oldiers supposedly interpreted this expression as "Me gook?", meaning "am I
a gook?" in broken English[4]
