Assistant Program Officer, Afghanistan

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded,
private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support freedom
around the world, seeks an Assistant Program Officer (APO) to work with its
Middle East and North Africa team. The position is based in Washington, D.C.
Position Summary:
The Assistant Program Officer (APO) will provide significant programmatic
support to the Endowment’s small grants activities in Afghanistan, and will
provide administrative support to other country programs as required. The
APO will travel to Afghanistan approximately 1-2 times per year.
Responsibilities:
* Draft summaries of proposals to present at quarterly Board meetings;
* Assist in the evaluation of project proposals;
* Communicate regularly with existing grantees;
* Assist in monitoring the work of existing grantees;
* Track political developments in the region;
* Provide administrative support to the region’s Program Officer;
* Organize events to highlight specific democracy-related issues.
Qualifications:
* Master’s level education or equivalent, experience-based knowledge in
International Affairs, Politics or a related discipline is preferred;
* At least two years of experience in democracy and governance-related
work is preferred;
* In-depth knowledge of political issues and trends in Afghanistan is
required;
* Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills in
English required;
* Professional proficiency in Dari (speaking and reading) required;
* MS Office Skills required, particularly Excel;
* Demonstrated high degree of organization, initiative, and commitment.

Internship for Latin America and the Caribbean Team

The National Endowment for Democracy is hiring an unpaid intern for Latin
America and the Caribbean for the spring 2011 semester. The position
requires 15 to 20 hours per week, and offers a daily transportation stipend.
Beginning and end dates are flexible. The intern will work with NED’s
Latin American staff in a combination of administrative and substantive
issues. Some of the tasks will include but not be limited to:
* assist program staff in project management duties including: attend
relevant meetings on key democracy issues affecting the region; review and
summarize proposals for NED program staff review; help map out NGOs and
donors working in key countries; and attend meetings with visiting grantees.
* assist the team in administrative duties including: develop team’s
contact database; prepare relevant news clips for distribution; file reports
and news items; help with translations; assist with planning and organizing
special meetings; and respond to requests for information.
Qualifications:
* Spanish fluency required; French a plus.
* Recent grad or current graduate student with a focus on Latin America
and democracy issues;
* strong writing and research skills, detail-oriented, multi-tasking,
open to learning and sharing;
* U.S. work permit required;
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

World Movement for Democracy Internship Opportunity

The World Movement for Democracy is seeking interns for spring 2011. The
World Movement for Democracy is a global network that brings together
democrats, including activists, practitioners, academics, policy makers, and
funders, to bolster democracy. The goal of the World Movement is to
strengthen democracy promotion efforts through uniting these leaders to
share and exchange lessons learned and best practices.
The World Movement is led by an International Steering Committee, chaired by
the Honorable Kim Campbell, former prime minister of Canada. Its
secretariat is housed at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in
Washington, DC. The intern will be working closely with the World Movement
’s secretariat staff.
Responsibilities, among other, include:
* Conducting research to track democracy promotion efforts;
* Assisting with workshop and event preparations;
* Distributing World Movement materials to NGOs and institutes overseas;
* Updating the World Movement Web site, including conducting research
for DemocracyVoices and drafting alerts as needed;
* Drafting entries for the online news source Democracy News; and
* Attending lectures and roundtable discussions on democracy.
We are seeking a student with strong research, writing, communication, and
organizational skills. Energetic, flexible team players who take initiative
and who have fluency in a foreign language and overseas experience are
encouraged to apply.
The internship is unpaid with possible renewal.
Time commitment:
M-F/30-40 hours a week

Interns have the opportunity to liaise with participants of the World
Movement for Democracy Network. A small stipend to cover local travel and
other small expenses is provided. Interns are welcome to attend NED events
open to staff. Academic credit can be offered with prior arrangement of

Program Assistant - Grantmaking Resource Center

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded,
private, nonprofit grant-making organization that works to support freedom
around the world, seeks a Program Assistant in its Grantmaking Resource
Center. The position is based in Washington, DC.
The Program Assistant will join the seven person Grantmaking Resource Center
team in the Office of the Vice President for Planning, Grants, Compliance
and Evaluation. The Program Assistant reports to the Directors of the
Grantmaking Resource Center. The team coordinates the quarterly proposal
process, serves as a point of contact for core grantees of the NED, liaises
with grants and other administrative staff at the Endowment, manages the
grantmaking systems of the NED, continuously assesses the grantmaking
process and implements process changes, develops written guidelines and
resources for the Program staff, and coordinates proposals and reports for
the Department of State (DOS).
Responsibilities:
* Supporting the quarterly board cycle (proposal intake, data entry,
review and tracking of board materials, and preparing for the quarterly
board meetings);
* Identifying process problems during the board cycle; helping Directors
to create and implement process or technology solutions;
* Liaising with the program staff of two or more regions to keep the GRC
directors updated on team training needs and updating the regional teams on
new Program procedures;
* Helping GRC teammates prepare for and deliver orientations and
trainings throughout the year;
* Updating grantee information and generating periodic reports using the
GIFTS database for various audiences at the NED;
* Helping to write and edit materials about Program procedures for
manuals, guidebooks and other technical documents;
* Updating the tracking sheet of Department of State grants, amendments,
and reports;
* Informing program staff of due dates related to DOS grants and routing
NED proposals and reports before submitting them to DOS;
* Generating quarterly briefs for DOS and USAID on NED grants approved
in the previous cycle;
* Maintaining GRC files;
* Supporting the Directors of the Grantmaking Resource Center as needed;
and
* Other duties as assigned.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
* B.A. required in International Relations, Regional Studies, Political
Science, World History or related field with international focus;
* Strong written and oral communication skills in English;
* Excellent organizational and troubleshooting skills;
* Administrative support experience, preferably at a grant-making
organization;
* MS Office Skills; and
* Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
The following qualifications are preferred:
* Strong written and oral communication skills in a second language;
* Training, tutoring, or teaching experience.

Program Officer for Middle East and North Africa

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded,
private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support democracy
around the world, seeks a Program Officer for the MENA team. This position
is based in Washington, DC.
Position Summary:
The Program Officer will work with MENA staff to provide programmatic
support to NED’s Middle East and North Africa grants program, develop the
Endowment’s strategy for the region, set programmatic priorities, monitor
and evaluate projects, and track program budgets.
Responsibilities:
* Evaluating project proposals and progress reports in specific
countries;
* Drafting summaries of proposals to present at quarterly Board of
Directors’ meetings;
* Maintaining regular communication with potential and existing grantees;
* Monitoring the work of grantees, including regular field visits;
* Tracking political developments in the region and informing NED’s
strategy for Middle Eastern and North African regions;
* Attending relevant internal and external meetings;
* Building and maintaining relationships with like-minded organizations,
including other donors, NED partners and regional organizations.
* Organizing and participating in events to highlight specific democracy
-related issues
Qualifications:
* Master’s degree in International Affairs, Political Science,
International Development or related discipline;
* At least 5 years of extensive experience in democracy-related work;
* In-depth understanding of political issues and trends in MENA region;
* Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
* Fluent written and oral Arabic is necessary; French is a plus;
* Time living, working or traveling in Middle East and North Africa;
* MS Office skills;
* High degree of organization and initiative;
* Excellent interpersonal skills.
