China helping evacuate EU nationals from Libya

Brussels - China has offered to evacuate 500 European Union citizens from
Libya on a ship it has in the area, officials in Brussels said Thursday.
An estimated 5,000-6,000 EU citizens are thought to be currently stuck in
Libya as the country spirals deeper into chaos. The bloc's member states
have scrambled to pull their citizens out of the danger zone, but have
struggled to deal with the numbers involved.
'There is a vessel which is actually coordinated by China, which has made
500 places available for EU citizens,' European Commission spokesman Raphael
Brigandi told journalists in Brussels.
On Wednesday, the EU activated a shared disaster-response system which
allows member states to pool resources such as ships and aircraft to deal
with sudden crises in Europe and across its borders.
The initiative is meant to speed up the evacuation process, as it would make
it easier for member states which do not have enough transport capacity to
request help from those who do. | g*********o
