This World Expo at Shanghai really showcases the open-mindness of the
mainland Chinese people and government. While the Taiwan political parties
and famous mouth pieces (名嘴) are either still fighting among themselves
for policy of opening up to mainland students or cheering for their major
participation in this World Expo, few Taiwan intellectuals have pondered the
following three questions:
1) Why the mainland can accommodate so many Taiwan elements? Can the same
thing happen in Taiwan?
2) Why the countries most anti-China, like the US, Japan, etc., are willing
to have open trade, personal resource exchange, and close science and
technology collaboration with mainland China?
3) Is Taiwan hating the mainland China the most in the world, another world
record achieved by Taiwan?
After watching so many Taiwan talk shows, I have a sense that despite the
good nature of many (maybe the majority of) Taiwanese and despite the
creativity of numerous individual Taiwanese, Taiwan will not be able to
catch the fast-moving Chinese train and will lose all its cards on the table
. Eventually, Taiwan will be absorbed by the mainland China on mainland's
terms. Really sorry to say this, but this will become the reality in the
coming 15-20 years. Let's all wait and see this finale.
Just throwing in a more intriguing observation, what are the percentages of
foreigners of those top symphony orchestras in the world, like the Berliner
Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, etc.? Even
with all those foreign elements, Berliner Philharmoniker is still Berliner.
Can the 100%-pure Taiwanese-made National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra overtake
Berliner Philharmoniker in terms of the quality of music making and the
fame of the organization in the art world? One can be the master of the
house after the door is closed.
