Thursday in the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old boy.
Sheila Muhs' sentencing phase of the trial begins Friday.
Deputies said Muhs and husband Gale fired a shotgun in May 2009 at a family
driving on the levee of the Trinity River, a public right-of-way in front of
the Muhs’.
Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor said the gunshots rang out about 9 p.
m., when Sheila Muhs fired once with a 12-gauge shotgun then handed it to
her husband. The couple later told police they shot the family because they
were trespassing.
Donald Coffey was struck in the head and died two days later.
The boy’s father, 5-year-old sister and a family friend were also injured
but survived.
Authorities said Donald Coffey Sr. had a pellet wound in his right shoulder.
Coffey’s daughter, Destiny, was hit in the elbow. A hospital spokeswoman
said 30-year-old Patrick Cammack, the family friend, was shot in the head.
DeFoor said the shots were fired from about 40 yards away. The victims were
unarmed.
DeFoor said the levee belongs to the subdivision and is not private property
