(RTTNews) - A group of suspected Taliban militants have stormed a major
naval air base in Pakistan's port city of Karachi, killing nearly a dozen
soldiers and taking several others hostage, local reports quoting officials
said early Monday.
According to officials, a group of more than 15 militants armed with rocket
propelled grenades and machine guns attacked the PNS Mehran naval aviation
base in Karachi late on Sunday. Television footage showed flames and smoke
rising over the base as Pakistani security forces fought the militants for
regaining control of the facility.
Unconfirmed local news reports indicated that those taken hostage by the
militants include some Chinese military personal who were at the base when
it was attacked. Pakistani military officials say they are waiting for day-
break to launch a final assault on the militants, who have now been confined
to one building at the base.
The militants are said to have targeted aircraft parked on the tarmac and
equipment in nearby hangers during the raid. Several aircraft, including US-
made P-3C Orion anti-submarine attack jets, have either been damaged or
destroyed in the attack. At least two of the multi-million dollar worth P-3C
Orion were reportedly set ablaze by the militants.
Pakistani military officials said security forces have already killed
several militants and forced the remaining attackers into one of the
buildings at the base. They added that more than eleven soldiers have died
in the process. The army has rushed heavily armed reinforcements to the base
to tackle the situation there. The attack has been claimed by the Pakistani
Taliban.
Taliban militants have staged a number of attacks on civilian and military
targets in Pakistan since US special forces killed al-Qaeda chief Osama bin
Laden in a raid carried out in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad on May 2.
Pakistan has since criticized the U.S. operation, insisting that it violated
the country's sovereignty.
Earlier this month, a double suicide bombing claimed by the Taliban had left
at least 80 people dead near the city of Peshawar. Also, an attack on a
Saudi consulate car in Karachi had killed a diplomat early last week. It was
followed by another attack on a US consulate vehicle in which a passer-by
was killed. But there were no American fatalities in that attack
Taliban militants have said that these attacks were to avenge the death of
the al-Qaeda chief. Also, the al-Qaeda and its affiliates have pledged to
carry out attacks on the U.S. and other targets across the world to avenge
bin Laden's killing.
Even before bin Laden's death, such attacks were becoming common in Pakistan
, where its military is struggling to contain a resurgent Taliban insurgency
despite launching several anti-militant offensives in the country's restive
north-western tribal regions.
Taliban militants have now extended their operations across the country
after being hit by several anti-militant operations launched by the
Pakistani military on their strongholds in the north-western tribal belt
bordering Afghanistan.
The Pakistani military has launched anti-Taliban operations in six of the
seven regions in the country's troubled north-west. But, it has so far
resisted U.S. calls to take on Taliban militants in North Waziristan, who
often launch cross-border attacks on international coalition forces in
Afghanistan.

那就是，米国逼迫巴基斯坦去围剿塔利班就是为了制造巴国内战和内耗。
作为中国盟友又是伊斯兰世界的唯一有核大国，巴绝对是米疣的心腹大患。
本来塔利班和巴国政府之间是相安无事，甚至可以说是兄弟或朋友的关系。
但前任总统穆萨拉夫在米国的红萝卜和大棒的兼施之下，最终答应去剿塔。
而一旦打仗流血后，关系自然恶化，并且很难和好，基本双方就变成斗鸡。
巴内战点燃。而得利的则是制造这内战的斗鸡主人，一石多鸟的坐收渔利。 |
