Professor’s posting triggers backlash, prompts apology

LA JOLLA — University of California San Diego officials have taken down a
chemistry professor’s web page that used a term offensive to Chinese people
and issued an apology.
A web page for Clifford Kubiak, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry,
included a set of purported “lab rules,” apparently meant to be humorous.
The first three “rules” were: “no Disney music,” “don’t be that guy”
and “if you can’t turn on the instrument, you shouldn’t use it.”
No. 4 was: “Don’t believe anything the Chinaman says.”
Wide knowledge of the web page developed over the weekend after its contents
were posted on an Internet forum for Chinese-speaking academics, prompting
a flurry of comment around the world.
“At least in the U.S., the word ‘Chinaman’ is usually considered
derogatory,” Mingyu Guo, a lecturer at the University of Liverpool in
England, wrote in an email to The San Diego Union-Tribune. “Usage of this
term is strongly discouraged by Asian American organizations.
“At this day and age, it is incredible to see this kind of racial
discrimination still exists, so I brought it to your attention.”
UCSD spokesman Jeff Gattas said the web page was taken down sometime over
the weekend, as soon as chemistry department leaders became aware of it.
Suresh Subramani, UCSD’s executive vice chancellor for academic affairs,
and Mark Thiemens, dean of physical sciences, issued a statement late Monday
afternoon:
“On behalf of President Mark Yudof, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and the UC
San Diego community we are truly disappointed by the insensitive and
offensive language that appeared on the website of Professor Clifford Kubiak
. This language does not conform to our commitment to the UCSD Principles of
Community.
“We have communicated today with Professor Kubiak, who has ensured that the
offending language has been removed, and he will provide a formal, written
apology. This apology will be posted on Professor Kubiak’s website.
“Further, we have asked the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and
Discrimination to review the matter. Please accept our sincere apologies on
behalf of the university.”
Kubiak, who was chairman of his UCSD department from 2002 to 2006, did not
respond Monday to requests for comment. |

这次UCSD这厮要是都上不了TV local news。UCSD CSSA的那些人就下台好了。
到现在CSSA没有任何表示申明。以主席没买买提ID之由置身事外。到现在只有报纸报道
，还是Liverpool的华人搞的。UCSD CSSA的饭桶就是一群组织BBQ的货。 |

美国虽说不搞文字狱,
但是你现在的言行可能还会影响到将来的事业.

subscribers，还上了全国电视新闻采访。CSSA那帮要是怕出头当初就别冒尖当主席呀
。只怕是和胡主席合影吃饭的事都争先恐后。到这事上，给整个SAN DIEGO的华人学生

为有此可能引起的误导深感歉意。所以我们又失去了一个可能的证人。

到现在为止，我们还没有联系到真正能指出教授人品不好的任何UCSD的内线。因此本事
可能真是教授学生搞得一个极大的错误，但UCSD许诺会继续调查下去。
这件事是UCSD的事情。感谢大家的集体总动员，我们现在已在事情发生4天内达到了这
些结果：
1. 网站星期天晚上就被删除
2. 系主任星期天晚上就私人道歉，星期一晚上也给UCSDCSSA道歉
3. 校办公室道歉， Dean道歉
4. 当事人道歉

现在我们继续关注的是学校反歧视部门的查证工作。还有等待UCSD CSSA的下一个举措。
我和大家一样，希望能够通过这件事提高我们华人在美国的地位，让他们知道那些c-
word不能滥用，但是因为找不到内线，我们虽然有一些证据，但因为没有人证，我们就
算找到律师，成功的可能也不是很大。但是群众的力量还是很大的，没有各位的群起群
力，事情不可能发生的这么快。我们还是可以用有效的而又便宜的网站措施例如
facebook， tweeter,告诉朋友，我们都为这件事尽了我们的绵薄之力。但是当我们都
一齐行动时，我们也很快地看到了事情的成效。
我自己还是为这件事处理的速度相当自豪的。 |
