BEIJING—A blind Chinese human-rights activist escaped his captors this week
after a year and a half of de facto house arrest, with growing indications
he has sought U.S. protection in Beijing.
Such a move by Chen Guangcheng, a fierce critic of forced abortions under
China's one-child policy, could prove to be a diplomatic dilemma for the U.S
. as well as an embarrassment to Chinese authorities ahead of a visit next
week by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Tim
Geithner.
Bob Fu, president of the U.S.-based Christian human-rights group ChinaAid,
claimed on Saturday that Mr. Chen was under U.S. protection, citing an
unidentified source close to the situation.
Mr. Fu had earlier said Mr. Chen had escaped on April 22 and was in Beijing
in a "100% safe location." He says Mr. Chen's escape is already believed to
have led to the arrest of at least one other activist.
Mr. Fu, said his group had acted as a "facilitator" in the escape and had
helped to brief the U.S. government and diplomats on the events. He said Mr.
Chen's escape was long-planned but declined to offer further details. "I
can't say more as there might be some diplomatic issues."
Neither the White House nor State Department would confirm that the U.S. was
protecting Mr. Chen in Beijing. | a*****a
