a vehicle that killed a nun in a hit-and-run accident Monday night on Long
Island.
The nun, Sister Jacqueline Walsh of Syosset, N.Y., was found lying next to
Rose Hill Road here around 8:30 p.m. Monday, the Southampton police said.
She had been on a retreat with colleagues from her order, the Sisters of
Mercy.
Sister Walsh had been working at St. Edward Confessor Church in Syosset for
about 10 years, said James Murphy, a deacon there.
She was “an indispensable and loved servant to the people,” he said,
adding that her efforts there included ministering to the sick and dying, as
well as training young people to join the altar service. “There’s great
sorrow because it’s an almost undefinable loss to our parish, ”he said.
Mr. Murphy said that the retreat was an annual event and that Sister Walsh
had been scheduled to remain there until Friday. |
