Those travelling with the Prime Minister were asked if they would remove
the symbols.
It is thought the request was because of the poppy’s significance to
the Opium Wars.
Startled officials accompanying the Prime Minister on his two-day trade
mission to China were shocked when they were asked if they would remove the
emblems before Mr Cameron’s official welcome at Beijing’s Great Hall.
A host of officials and four other Cabinet ministers — George Osborne,
Michael Gove, Chris Huhne and Vince Cable — all refused to remove their
poppies and they took their position to watch the Prime Minister inspect
Chinese troops alongside Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier.
One member of the Downing Street party said: “The Chinese told us it
would be inappropriate to wear poppies because of the Opium Wars. We
informed them they meant a great deal to us and we would be wearing them all
the same.” |

And TG let them do that? It's worse than having not asked them at all. If
you want to make this kind of demands, better think it through on what to do
if they refuse.
I personally would have refused to let them attend the meeting while they
were wearing it.
