This is what you get with group play. It is far more important to win a
medal than to lose a game. It is a common practice to sacrifice a position
in contests from chess and checkers to baseball and other sports to get an
advantage. This is pure strategy, well within the rules and there is nothing
immoral about it. No rules were broken and no penalty should have been
imposed. If the rules don't provide the desired outcome then change the
rules. Spectators should learn to appreciate and enjoy strategies allowed by
the rules

For strategically using rules to their advantage players should not be
penalized. They were not playing to lose but to win if not gold atleast a
silver. The format of the tournament was faulty. After the first round , the
total scores of each team must be the criteria for meeting opponents in the
other halves of the draw . Even then the finalists should depend on the
total score tally of each team .the best two with the highest tally must
meet in the finals. It should not be depended only on the strength of
defeating another team on slender margins .

Once uponn a time there were eight gladiators who saw the easy passage to
life; and their cunning was revealed, which caused their early termination.
Tis best to not compete and enjoy the finest things in life. One being, self

It's taken granted that rules should be taken advantage of, especially those
silly rules. It's the damn silly rule-maker, rather than the players, to
blame.

What purpose is there to a match if it encourages athletes to lose? The
match has no real value unless there is an unmistakable incentive to win.

A game, like a economic system, wiill not work if it rewards failure.
President Obama might want to keep this in mind the next time he attacks

Has anyone every seen a tennis player ease back once he is down a break in
order to save his energy for the next set? Has anyone every seen a tennis
player punished for this?
Has a swimmer ever allowed themselves to finish second and still qualify for
the final when they could possibly have won the heat?
Has a Tour de France contender ever coasted across the line rather than
contest a sprint in order to save energy for the next day in the mountains?
Disqualified for this ... never.
If the goal is to win the tournament, then any strategy which wins the
tournament should be fair game.
If the format leads to match throwing, then the organizers should be
disqualified from ever organizing a tournament again.

People defending these cheaters are not seeing the whole picture the Koreans
nor the Indonesians started to do this until they saw the Chinese do it.As
for the Chinese it was about making sure that both Chinese teams had the
highest odds of facing 1 another for the Gold because if team 2 would have
won then in the next round they would have had to face each other with only
the winner to advance,no matter how you slice or dice it that is considered
cheating in every sense of the word and anyone trying to defend obviously
have no sense of fair play.

Burnell, ever calculating, decided early upon an audacious but highly risky
route to a gold medal, where the British double would deliberately lose
their heat against the French to avoid meeting Denmark, their main rivals,
in the semi-final. The ensuing repechage provided an extra race to reach
competitive sharpness and smoothed their progress to a final where, sure
enough, they encountered the Danes.

Strategy is a major part of winning. Good strategy is necessary for
championship. It is a part of competing in any sport. The rules of the sport
must figure into the strategy used. These teams did what it took to win
gold. Swimmers swim to qualify for the finals. Ask any gold medal swimmer if
they always swim their fastest or if they swim to qualify so they can give
it their all and go for the gold in the finals. How does this differ from
the Badminton teams that used a strategy to go for the gold.

Now the athletes have been expelled, Thomas Lund or somebody in the Olympic
Committee should apologize or RESIGN for the confusion of the rules that
cause the problem.

If the game rule does not prohibit throw-matches, the players have the right
to do so in order to maximize their competition interest.
If it does prohibit, then it has to define what is a "throw-match" in an
explicit way. Then the matter is if the behavior of the players can be
considered "match-throwing".
A rule or law should be UNAMBIGUOUS and enforceable, otherwise it cannot be
called rule or law.
