I Have a Dream
Inspired by Dr. MLK and a post on tianya.com
I am honored to join with you today in what will go down through generations
as the greatest online demonstration for justice in the history of our
nation.
Sixty-four years ago, a group of great Chinese, declared to the world that a
new People’s Republic had risen from the ashes. This deafening voice is a
great beacon light of hope to millions of Chinese who had been seared in the
flames of poverty, injustice, and centuries of wars. It came as a joyous
day break to end the long night of their sufferings.
Sixty-four years later, the life of a Chinese girl, Ling Zhu, is still full
of agony and horror. For twenty years, Ling and her family have been
staggering on the thorny road towards justice. For twenty years, they live
on a lonely island of injustice in the midst of a vast ocean of legal
systems and institutions of modern society. Yet for twenty years, they,
along with people who care about them, never give up the hope that justice
will eventually come.
And so we’ve come together online to unveil a shameful crime and to demand
justice.
When the architects were building our magnificent new Republic, they
promised that all her citizens, regardless of their political background,
would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, justice, and the pursuit
of happiness. It is obvious today that the Republic has defaulted on this
promise insofar as Ling and her family are concerned.
The belief in justice supported Ling and her family for the past two decades
. However, how much longer will they be able to pursue it as Ling's parents
are in their seventies? When will the light of justice be shining on them
after twenty years of ordeals?
Today we have come here online to remind our Republic of the fierce urgency
of now. This is no time to engage in finger pointing or cursing. Now is the
time to make the real promise of justice and reopen the case. Now is the
time to track down the suspect(s) and bring them to trial. Now is the time
to lift our nation from the infamous obstruction of justice that had been
prevailing in the past two decades.
Ling does not belong to her family alone. She belongs to this golden age;
she belongs to all of us who embrace justice; she belongs to our magnificent
nation and her great people.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. The
material prosperity should not dampen people’s pursuit of justice. Two
thousand and thirteen is not an end, but a beginning.
We would keep fighting. Ling and her parents might not have another twenty
years, but we do. We will be fighting till the day that justice is served,
and our belief will never die. We believe that the truth will be told and
evil will be punished!
This is my dream today!
I have a dream that one day Ling’s parents can hold their heads high and
enjoy the scene of the blue sky. They will be able to smile again and admire
our nation: what a lovely place to live!
I have a dream that one day the Case of Ling Zhu will become a milestone on
our nation’s road towards justice, and may it be hailed by generations to
come.
I have a dream that one day all of us who care about Ling can raise our arms
and cheer for our success: the justice is done!
How long will we be waiting? I do not know. But I know that we will never
give in, never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or
petty, never give in …
We would never give in, for the hope that our nation will rise again from
darkness. We would never give in, because our people are nice and brave. We
would never give in, because all of us are singing, and will continue to
sing with new meaning:
This is our motherland
This is where we were born and grew up
Let the sun shine for everyone
